Local Brews
Another successful month in the books as June saw us accumulate a record of 17 - 9 for a winning percentage of .654, but to this point in the season we are still only clinging to a 3 game lead in the standings. It looks like this race will not be put to bed until the final week of the season as both Baltimore and California continue to hang around and breath down our necks. Our pitching continues to shoulder the load as we are ranked 1st in the league in overall staff ERA and 1st in Starters’ ERA at the halfway point. So far we have been able to follow the script that was written up in the offseason which is pitching, pitching and then more pitching with just enough offense to pull out our fair share of wins.
Current Porter Standings<table border="2" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" width="20%"><tr><th>Team</th> <th>W</th> <th>L</th> <th>PCT</th> <th>GB</th></tr>

We’ve had several standout performances to date, but we want to highlight a few (just for the month of June):
Geoff Scott - At the age of 23 it looks like Scott is really starting to reach his potential. The biggest area of improvement is in his ability to draw walks and get on base. For the month of June he had 34 hits and 17 BBs in 119 ABs. For the month he delivered a slash line of .333 | .429 | .451 | .880 and scored 13 runs while driving in 10.
Joe Aurillo - Aurillo put up the kind of month that we need from our Ace, posting a win-loss record of 4 - 0 in 5 starts. His strikeout numbers are a bit down, but he’s still getting it done. For the month: <table border="2" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" width="10%"><tr><th>W</th> <th>L</th> <th>ERA</th> <th>IP</th> <th>HA</th> <th>R</th> <th>ER</th> <th>HR</th> <th>BB</th> <th>K</th> <th>WHIP</th> </tr><tr><td>4</td><td>0</td><td>.52</td><td>34.1</td><td>20</td><td>3</td><td>2</td><td>1</td><td>10</td><td>23</td><td>.87</td></tr></table>
Cristian Correa - Last year’s rookie surprise in our bullpen (made the All-Star team as a MR) is having a solid sophomore year as well and his June was outstanding. Between Correa and Trevor Broomfield (and a solid starting staff) we’ve been able to cover up a few other questionable members of our bullpen. <table border="2" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" width="10%"><tr><th>W</th> <th>L</th> <th>SV</th><th>ERA</th> <th>IP</th> <th>HA</th> <th>R</th> <th>ER</th> <th>HR</th> <th>BB</th><th>K</th><th>WHIP</th></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>0</td><td>2</td><td>.00</td><td>15.2</td><td>10</td><td>0</td><td>0</td><td>0</td><td>2</td><td>11</td><td>.77</td></tr></table>
Micro Brews
-C Shihei Kataoka (AA) Actually promoted to AA during the month of June. I’m not certain what he will actually become in the future, but for now he has at least put himself on the map as far as prospects go in our system. Long term he may be a backup catcher/bench bat. For the month of June:
<table border="2" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" width="10%">
<tr><th>BA</th> <th>OBP</th> <th>SLG</th> <th>OPS</th> <th>H</th> <th>2B</th> <th>3B</th> <th>HR</th> <th>R</th> <th>RBI</th> <th>BB</th> <th>K</th></tr><tr><td>.365</td><td>.400</td><td>.524</td><td>.924</td><td>23</td><td>8</td><td>1</td><td>0</td><td>9</td><td>13</td><td> 5</td><td>5</td></tr></table>
- P Anthony Ratcliffe - A Ball - This year’s 6th round draft pick has wasted no time getting acclimated to pro ball logging 9.2 IP without giving up an earned run while striking out 6 batters. Not bad for a 17 year old straight out of high school. Plus he sports one of the best mustaches in the BLB universe amongst 17 year olds.
These Pretzels Are Making Me Thirsty!!
A “quick hit” look at goings on around the league in the third month:
- Davenport 1B Kenichi Sato recorded the first 6 hit game of his career against the Washington Bats on 06/15/88.
- Denver Bulls LF Dane Browning also recorded a 6 hit night on 06/24/88.
- That’s the 3rd 6 hit game in the league this year after no such performances in 1987 and only 1 in 1985 - 86 combined. You have to go back to 1984 for the only other time in league history that we’ve had 3 players turn in 6 hit nights and we still have 3+ months to go.
- Virginia 3B Vincent Nino reached 1,000 Runs Batted In for his career on 06/19/88. He became the 6th player in league history to reach the milestone. Next up? Pedro Zamarida and Eddie O’Fallon who each have a legitimate shot of reaching the mark soon (currently at 988 and 975 respectively), though O’Fallon has been slowed by hamstring issues recently.
- Sin City DH/C Sergio Lumar is only 12 runs away from scoring his 1,000 run which would mark the second time a player has reached that level in the BLB (Harry Keppel of course being the other).
- Washington Bats CF Michio Nago had a 22 game hitting streak end on 06/21/88.
- Guides SP Teagan Corrigan continues to cement his legacy as he is 1 victory short of becoming the 1st player in league histroy to reach 200 Wins. He's not what he once was (and who is at the age of 35), but he's still a top flight pitcher. His next shutout will be his 25th career CG SO (already the all-time league leader with 24, the next highest on the list is the retired Joe Chavarraga with 16), but it would also be his 1st in over a season and a half.
Broken Taps
A quick look at significant injuries sustained during the third month:
- Los Alamos’ Johnny Buzzell was lost for 4 weeks on 06/01 with knee tendonitis
- Syracuse Slammer SS Noah George was lost for the rest of the season with a broken kneecap on 06/04
-The Clowns lost RF Subaru Hiraki for 6 weeks due to backspasms 06/07
- Maine lost the services of OF Will Porter for 6 weeks with a shoulder injury 06/07
- Maine was struck with another costly injury during June when SS Clarence Evans fractured his thumb in a collision on the basepaths on 06/15. He’s scheduled to be out for 6 weeks
-Pittsburgh P Frank Esser will miss the rest of the season after doctors discovered a tear in his rotator cuff. He’ll be on the shelf 4-5 months with the injury discovered on 06/19
- Indy lost the services of SS Anier Tafur on 06/20 for 5-6 weeks with an elbow issue
- Pawtucket saw 36 year old 2B Tom Isgar suffer a severely sprained ankle that will keep him out of action for 6 weeks on 06/21
- Davenport OF Ivan Arellano suffered an ankle injury that will keep him out for 4 weeks on 06/22
- Guides' OF Jed Lynch was lost for 4 weeks on 06/28 with a strained hammy
- It was a tough month injury-wise for perennial power Maine. The Guides rotation took a blow on the last day of the month as 11 game winner Pete Hudder was lost for the season with a torn rotator cuff (10 month injury). The only good news on the injury front for the Guides is they have an 11 game lead in the Ale and should be able to withstand this recent string of injuries.
Award Winning Brews
DL Batter of the Month: Norm Seltzer - young, blossoming star that made Joe Seagarra expendable is living up to expectations. In June he produced a line of .419 | .491 | .699 | 1.190 with 5 HR, 22 RBI and 25 Runs scored
DL Pitcher of the Month: Gervasio Areas - 4 - 0 for the month with an ERA of 1.17. He struck out 26 batters in 38.1 IP while delivering 5 QS in 5 chances
DL Rookie of the Month: Hector Hernandez - .309 | .385 | .638 | 1.024 with 8 HR, 30 RBI and 17 runs scored
IL Batter of the Month: Mel Woodbury - He's been everything he was supposed to be for Virginia after coming over in the offseason. June saw him punish opposing pitchers to the tune of: .381 | .450 | .670 | 1.121 with 7 HR, 21 RBI and 25 runs scored
IL Pitcher of the Month: Joe Aurillo - Aurillo's month was documented above in the Local Brews section
IL Rookie of the Month: Raul Marin - Funny, all 3 IL winners were all drafted by the Freedom organization. Marin was a 1st rounder for Philly back in '85 and was traded away for Carl Pateshall the same year he was drafted. A line of .323 | .400 | .581 | .981 with 7 HR, 16 RBI and 12 runs scored pulled in the honors for Marin. Those 7 HRs were included his 1st career homer.
