  • Jonathan Brinkworth....what a stud.

Drafted in the inaugural draft by the Washington Yankees, at 38 years old. That year, he was 14-7, 3.04 ERA, 222 IP, 182 K. He actually played until he was 43!

I've read that on the OOTP forums as well.

              • I just don't like how OFs can win the award for playing different positions in the OF. It should pick the top 3 OFs and let it be.

That's just my opinion, but I think it's handled poorly as is because it gives credit to players that might not deserve it.

This goes into what Pat is mentioning. When you force a decision by OF position rather than the OF overall, then you're limiting the statistical analysis made by the game to determine the best fielders.

As it stands, it's basically saying that you can have 24 horrible Right Fielders take enough chances during the season and allow one to win the award simply because the rest of the field is weak. That cuts out an award for a more deseving CF or LF.

And it is much more noticeable in the OF because teams are more willing to sacrifice defense in the outfield than in the IF.

                • My counter to that would be isn't playing CF different from RF? RF different from LF? I mean, shouldn't it be by position? Won't CFers tend to have a better range? Corner OFers have different changes and assists? I think when you're going strictly on equations, it almost has to be my position.

Yes this too. I guess I feel it should look at all of it.

Rather than saying: This guy is the best RF because he did this at the position and this guy is the best CF because he did that at the position, I'd like to see the game say: Well, this guy was the second best RF and what he did there was clearly much better than what the best CF did.

But, I don't really complain much because I understand your argument.

There's also the clever little trick the game plays by making guys more suited for one position in the game. I know it's not easy to tell a LF in the Majors to play RF, but it's much more limiting to do that in OOTP. There is a bit of awkwardness with how it rates OF ratings.

And that goes into guys with great baserunning speed not having range in CF. Or great CFers being unable to play RF or LF.

                    • You've reminded me of a related little quirk that catches my eye once in a while. I've noticed that sometimes the position rating doesn't seem to jive with the player's other fielding ratings (range, error, arm). For example, I have a 1B who has 4s for range, error, and arm, but his position rating is a 6. Extremely picky, I know. But it always strikes me as being odd. Maybe I'm not interpreting something correctly.

I believe experience at the position is also factored into their positional rating.

This was one of the first guys in the league that I recognized as "great ratings, shitty stats." You know, the guys who perform well below their ratings. I think when he was in DC, I had him rated something like 5-6-7-6-5. Dude was garbage. I guess he did hit 30 homers and 120 RBI for Hartford in '81, with a .228 average.
