        • None of these teams won 100 games. Interesting. In fact most of them weren't even winning teams. I don't know what that says, if anything.

I think it says next to nothing other than (a) they played a lot of close games and (b) they had a good Closer.

Just going by basic math. A good closer gets what, 40-50 saves a year? On a team that wins 75 games of course his % will be higher than a team that wins 100 games.

As team wins go up, the closers number of saves don't seem to.

              • Better teams (100 win teams) likely produce less Save situations.

I would think they would have more save situations because they'd be leading by 3 or less runs in the 9th inning more than losing teams.

I'm not sure. I would think a 100 team statistically (in most cases) would have more games leading by 3 runs or more in the 9th than a 70 win team. I guess it makes sense to me by the fact that Save numbers tend to be very similar across an entire league despite the difference in Win Totals.

Good teams also are more apt to have starters that can close games out themselves.

                      • Maybe we should find the seasons with the highest amount of complete games compared to total wins?

                          • This was the same thing someone tried to argue with Hoffman vs. Rivera. They tried to say that Hoffman had less save opportunities because he was on a worse team.

But a quick run-through showed that during most of Rivera's productive seasons, the Yankees were middle to bottom in save opportunities.

Good teams win more games by 4 or more runs.

                            • Or maybe since the good teams win more, they don't want to be trotting out their closer 3 nights in a row? I guess we'd have to look at team saves then.

The best teams actually have had the most saves since the league started:
