  • My 2018 third round pick Dave Boeser just sneaked onto the list for the first time at #99.

    http://www.simgamingnetwork.com/blb/...ayer_4058.html

He's someone I feel especially excited about. (Pat must be tired of me talking up Boeser to him by now.)

Boeser could be a plus-plus defender at seven positions and looks like he can swing the bat at an above-average level, too.

      • SP Enrique "The Artist" Bernardi debuts on the top 100 at #95.

UDFA CF Jimmy Dumais debuted last week and is now up to #92...and now he's hurt.

Those two push Seattle to the #2 system with a slim lead over Kansas City. However, #1 Davenport is head and shoulders above the rest on the rankings. Their 241 points is almost the same as #4 California and #5 Carolina, combined!

        • It's no secret that Centerfielders are overrated. I wonder what this does to the draft moving forward?

Freddy Morton, a 23-year-old undrafted centerfielder still in A ball, is rated as my second best hitting prospect. Behind a 24-year-old CF prospect Jimmy McGraw that is just making it now to AAA and can't even start.

Meanwhile, Ed Zahn has played 61 games in AAA, has hit 9 home runs and is batting .312, and he's only 7th. 3 centerfielders are in front of him according to OSA. It's kind of crazy.

            • In defense of the game, it's reflective of real life top prospects lists these days.

I was just reading FanGraphs new top 100 prospects list this week.

It has at least 11 center fielders.

Our BLB list? It has 11, too.

Idk...J.P. Soderberg is listed as my #4 prospect above guys like Corr and Joiner despite the fact that both my scout and OSA not only prefer both of those players, but they don't see Soderberg as much of anything. He was even on the top 100 for a brief period. Makes no sense. He's a 24 year old in AAA who's barely keeping his head above water.

                • Maybe we are looking at it from the wrong reference point?

Maybe good defense in center field is just that important.

Good defense and a decent bat.

                      I think this is it.

The game clearly values defense a lot more than it once did.

                      • Here's the full list of BLB players who have played 100 games in center field in 2020 and have an OPS of at least .700:

Geoff Reisinger (who has a negative-20 zone rating, by the way, and has been worth fewer than 1.0 WAR)
                        Dave Sliney
                        O.P. Williams
                        Tom Roseboom
                        Ian Coffey

                        That's it.

                        That's the whole list.

Four actual center fielders, plus Reisinger who is McPhersoning fly balls in the middle of the outfield.

So yeah. Center fielders who can catch fly balls and hit near a league average level are rare and valuable.

P.S. I realize a few guys have missed time due to injury and would otherwise be included, but injuries are a part of baseball and the point still stands.

I haven't done any serious looks into other positions but every top Centerfielder in the positional strength overview is on a team competing for a playoff spot.

With maybe one exception, the teams with poorer Centerfielders have poorer records.

                            Hmm.

I still think something's up. Soderberg is a complete non-prospect and has no business on the top 100. His ceiling is backup outfielder.
