  • Comparing our draft pool to the MLB isn't apples to apples though. We have always been and still are closer to the NFL draft.

    • I'm guessing part of the reason we don't see more guys hitting the BLB is because we have injuries on low. A lot of these marginal guys won't ever see any time because we don't model injuries realistically in fear of losing our stars.

          • 1.19 SP Tom Calligan debuts at #81 on the Top Prospect List and was listed as the #3 overall prospect on BLB News draft email.

2.11 C Willie De Jesus debuts at #68! I think that might be a personal best for highest debut by a 2nd rounder. It was down to Calligan and De Jesus for the 1.19 pick. I was shocked Willie was still around.

Both are HS kids and will take a long, long time to develop but I'm very pleased with the draft. Neither are really "Washington Types" as Calligan is a stuff pitcher and De Jesus is a HR threat and not the best defender...but they will do.

None of my other draft picks made my organizational Top 20. However, all will be given some playing time over the next sim to see if they can show a flash to keep them on the Single-A Roster. We are currently 40/40 and will have a few tough decisions to make. There are a handful of AAAA types down there that will be easy to let go but most are 18-22 year olds.

            • Why you even have a 2.11 draft pick is what constantly wows me the most.

If there's one thing I am jealous of is your ability to somehow continue getting owners to give you good draft picks for players you don't need or desire.

I too could find steals early in the 2nd round if I could actually get responses to trade offers of players owed less money and having talent. But Pat, man, you somehow always do it and that's what keeps you at the top.

In another league I'm in, it's another guy that reminds me of Pat who is nearly always in the championship. He's more dramatic though because he constantly flips high prices old veterans for first rounders and it just leaves me wondering why anyone continues to deal with him.

I don't say it to block Pat trades. This is more the awe for whatever gift people like you two have. I don't have it.

              • Not really sure I like how the game ranks it's prospects. Considered DeJesus when I picked at 11 and 17. Went with Peller and Shook and Willie D is ranked 68, neither of those two hitters are ranked.

I don't think DeJesus is nearly as good of a player or will be as good of a player as either one of those guys. But he's the one ranked. I wouldn't move either player for him but that's beside the point.

Peller will be ranked in the next sim. I guarantee it.

The game seems to sometimes have a delay with some players. Not sure what causes it.

                      1. I agree with the 2nd round steals. I've often even moved down from Round One to nab a sleeper or two in the early 2nd. I just feel there is ALWAYS guys that I like in the 15-20 range that are still around at 2.10ish.

                      2. To get 2.11 this year, I traded catcher Willie Lara to Philly before the season started. He's a stud defender, 8/8 my scout, and projects to be decent with the bat. Good contact and avoid K. But as a lefty hitter, he had no future in my organization as I already have a young, better lefty catcher at the BLB level. Lara was ranked #98 last I checked before the new rookies were put in. If Lara was a RH hitter, I wouldn't have made the trade. In terms of just "value" I think Philly won that trade honestly. Lara is BLB ready at the time of the trade, a rookie, and a rare 8/8 defender. Even if he only spot-starts vs. RHP his entire career, he will always have a job because of that defense. De Jesus might rank Top 100 right now, but he's a long shot to even make the league. And when he gets there, he is a RH, poor defensive, free-swinging hitter. Those guys grow on trees.

                      3. I have got a bad rap over the years of "winning" all my trades but I've really tried my best to make sure if I was the other team, I would still make the trade. If you do a quick history search for all the trades I've made, probably in the last decade, you will see such a trend.

100% this. If De Jesus played OF or 1B, especially at his defensive level, he probably isn't ranked.

I don't think you "win" all of your trades. I think so long as both teams got what they wanted, both are winners.

I only think you find ways to make trades that benefit your long term health when it would seem more productive from a competitive standpoint to hurt your chances of doing so.

But then again, I don't value the competition as much as some so it's probably wrong of me to even weigh those decisions.
