  • The 2065 Daily Keg - Week 2

    04/20/2065

With everyone playing six it was the Import, and more specifically the Bock, which beat up on their competition. The Blues from Windy City swept Dallas and Wilmington, while LAD swept Toronto and took two of three against Santo Domingo. The Dinos at 11-2 now have the best record in the league and are on top of the Power Rankings. Their Bock mates the Pilots are second at 10-3, while Windy City and Denver are 9-4 and third and fourth in the Power Rankings. Save some wins for the rest of the league guys. On the other side of Bock life is poor Phoenix. They are 2-10 and their minor league teams started out the season 3-21.

    Performance of the Week

RF Darrin Turner - The 24 year old comes from a long line of mid round picks that turn into Bat stars. Taken 68th overall in 2060 he's a DWI potential outfielder who can also hit the ball (.348 this season). This past week in an 11-4 victory over Syracuse he tallied up four hits (two home runs), drove in four, and scored twice.

    Prospect of the Week

3B Isaac Tibaldi - The 3x NCAA All-Star was somehow left off the team this season, a season in which he hit .329/.401/.591 with 9 HR, 34 RBI, and a 130 OPS+ in 43 games. He has the arm to play third in the BLB, and the potential power to be a big bat in someones lineup.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. Another solid week for 18 year old Fredrick 'Turf' Palumbo, who hit .476 with 2 HR, 3 RBI, and 3 stolen bases. He's now hitting .487 on the year, one of two players above .400. The 6'3 second basemen from Dallas, Texas was born in 2046, when California's Caron Wilson was 26 years old and in his second full season in the BLB. Scouts think Palumbo's power could be a "human highlight film" while he's a potential .330 hitter. He has a long way to go but he's shut up critics (and the DK) so far. The record for hits for an 18 year old belongs to Carolina's Dominick 'Shock' Booth who recorded 58 total in 2060. Palumbo is on pace for 257.

    2. It's hard to believe the top four records in the league all belong in the Bock. What's even worse for the DK is that we picked Cali to win it all, and they aren't one of those top four. The Kodiaks were 6-5 though before ending the week with two late inning meltdowns. They allowed Dallas to score three in the 10th on Saturday to lose 4-1, then watched the Drillers score five in the 9th on Sunday to lose again 6-4. Word from the streets is they had to remodel the GM's suite after the series was over. They will rebound though, and this could easily be a year where the Bock sends five and the Stout sends one.

    3. The current Stout leader is Carolina, who suffered a big blow when starting pitcher and veteran leader Chase Vaughan tore his rotator cuff and will be out for over a year. The 35 year old is a 3x All-Star who was drafted by Carolina in the 5th round of the 2047 draft. He became a full time starter in 2053, and didn't have less than 31 starts in 10 of the next 11 seasons. Over that time he had 360 starts and threw 2,333 innings, seventh most during that time frame. The one season he missed was 2058, when he partially tore his UCL in spring training. Another not so great circumstance for the Tobs is that they signed him to a $66m contract extension after last year. With $48m left on the contract they are hoping he can rehab his way back like he did last time. Vaughan was just 28 years old then, so at 35 it's going to be a much tougher road.

    4. The so called 'feeder' leagues are in full playoff mode as the CCBL is in round one, the NCAA is in the Sweet 16, and high school is in the quarterfinals. Over the regular season in the Cape Cod League it was the Orleans Firebirds who went 34-15 with a league leading +92 run differential. In the NCAA it was the Oregon Ducks who went 36-12, and already swept Baylor in the Sweet 16. Finally at the high school level it was the Cullman (AL) Cavaliers who went 30-10, and promptly got swept 2-0 by the 20-20 Notre Dame (CA) Knights.

    5. What's on tap? We're back at it as the divisional match-ups highlight week three of the season.
