  • The 2064 Daily Keg - Week 15

    07/21/2064

In a short week there were the haves and have-nots. The haves were Hartford, Wilmington, Indy and California, who all swept the have-nots in Pawtucket, Toronto, Pittsburgh, and Denver respectively. Or maybe that should be 'dis-respectively'. Some team leaders: Hartford scored 21 runs (DEN 4), Washington, Wilmington, and Windy City walloped eight home runs (DEN/NY 0), and Batavia swiped eight bases (PAW/NO 0).

    Power Rankings

    1) Washington Bats (126.4, o)

    Performance of the Week

1B Colton Coffin - The Millers/Bulls castoff continues to prove what a mistake it was as Coffin has been on fire lately. On July 14th against Seattle he racked up four hits, drove in three, and scored once in the 6-1 victory. This season he's hitting .315 with 34 HR and 79 RBI and was just selected to his first All-Star game since 2060.

    Prospect of the Week

LF Christian Hokanson - The 'Stache' was a second round pick this season out of Arizona State and he's already punishing the poor Rookie League pitchers he's been facing. With a .299/.413/.782 slash line he's already hit 14 home runs in...lets double check that...yes 27 games. Scouts think he's a future .290 hitter who's a home run threat every time he comes to the plate.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. How about those Whalers. Hartford has now won six straight and at 52-42 has built a one game lead in the 'Awesome Ale' over Indy. With Levi Lane still out another three weeks, we did not see Hartford going 29-13 since he went down with an injury. It helps that Justin Reaves went absolute bonkers since then, hitting .302 with 13 HR and 24 RBI while stealing 11 bases. His reward was the 24 year old being selected to his first ever All-Star game. Throw in All-Star Ian Schreiber who hit .312 with 12 HR and 30 RBI during that time as well. Currently Hartford is second in the Domestic in average, slugging, OBS, extra base hits, and runs scored. What this team do in a few weeks when Lane comes back?

    2. Speaking of All-Stars, lets congratulate a few other first time selections who made the starting lineup: 1B Abdoul Ren (DAL), 2B Casey Courtney (IND), and SS Darien Kerstetter (SYR). All these players are from the DL as the IL had no first year starters on their squad. The Import league starting pitcher was Charlie Spence, who played in his 10th All-Star game. No one on either team has more appearances. The 34 year old is 9-8 with a 3.17 ERA and 135 ERA+ this season, the fourth highest ERA+ of his storied career. All though slowing down after pitching over 2700 innings in his career, he's just one win away from 200 on his career. When he reaches that mark he'll be the 41st player in the history of the league to do so.

    3. Windy City is now first in total zone rating coming in at +34.54. The Blues are 57-37 and one of the favorites to win the 2064 Brewmasters. Second place falls to the Denver Bulls, who sport a +31.07 number and have almost an eight point lead on third place Wilmington. Unfortunately for the Bulls they are the complete opposite of the Blues record wise at 37-57. This is not the season they hoped for, to say the least. They aren't the only ones though, as many GM's around the league stated to us they have no idea what happened. Pitching wise they are above average, but they just haven't been able to hit the ball. In the Import they are last in OBP, OBS, and stolen bases, and 11th in walks, home runs, and runs scored. It doesn't help that they have been extremely unlucky as they are 11-27 in one-run and extra inning games. All we can say is that sometimes one thing leads to another, and the snowball effect is just too much to overcome. Even in dark times though they only have to look back two seasons, where the 2062 Bulls took home their franchises first ever title. Flags fly forever.

    4. At the break our friends at Stats+ have four teams as locks to make the playoffs: Wilmington, Washington, LAD, and California. Right behind them are Windy City (99.9%), Hartford (95.3%), Carolina (94.0%) and New Orleans (88.1%). Then there are eight teams between 75%-25% with finally Toronto, Batavia, and Denver under 8.0%. As mentioned before the Import seems to be between New York and Baltimore for the final Wild Card spot, with Batavia holding on for dear life. In the Domestic though nine teams are within seven games, with only Syracuse and Maine not having a postseason shot. At least one league is going to give us some excitement.

    5. What's on tap? We're back at it with a full schedule of games this week, with some great divisional series.
