  • The 2063 Daily Keg - Week 17

    08/06/2063

New Orleans and Windy City each go 5-1 as the Blues take over the Bock lead, and the Voodoo move to second place in the Domestic Wild Card standings. Other top weeks were had by LAD, Washington, Denver, Indy, and Maine who all went 5-2. On the other side of life Wilmington and Cali went 1-6, while Baltimore went 1-5. Some team leaders: Hartford hit .313 (BAL .248), Dallas and Maine smacked 11 home runs (LAD 3), Toronto swiped 22 bases (DEN/SDR 2), Windy City allowed just 14 runs (TOR 45), and opponents hit just .210 against the Bats (SYR .369).

    Performance of the Week

1B Vincent Manning - In a 19-5 beat down of the Rum Runners two players made it into the Top Performances of the season, with Manning just edging out teammate Eli Tracy. Down 2-0 in the 3rd, Manning crushed one of his two home runs for the day to give Montreal a 3-2 lead. Later during the 4th inning Manning once again hit another three run shot, which was part of a 10 run Export inning. The 24 year old former second round pick is now hitting .315 with 24 HR and 82 RBI on the season.

    Prospect of the Week

1B Ari Lynn - The coaching staff and scouts say he's lazy, greedy, shows no leadership, and isn't loyal to the organization. But dang can he hit the ball! As with most athletes character, or lack-of, is ignored when the talent is there, and Lynn has the talent. Drafted by Dallas in 2059 with the eighteenth overall pick, he has the ability to hit the ball about as far as humanly possible. He also has the ability to strike out alot. We definitely see this all or nothing masher making it to the BLB in a few seasons, but how he does there is anyone's guess.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. California was the victor for the month of July as the Kodiaks went a leagues best 18-6. Their pitching was lights out as they were first in the BLB in runs allowed (65), hits allowed (179), and ERA (2.71). Next up was Montreal who went 16-9 and in the process gained five games on the division leading Wildcats. Indy and Denver both went 15-10, as the Clowns have now assumed the Ale throne (which happens to be porcelain). Denver meanwhile finished the month at 64-40, which is only good enough for third in the 'Brutal' Bock. On the flip side Philly went 7-17, Seattle went 8-15, and Syracuse went 8-16.

    2. We might actually have a race in the Lager. As talked about Montreal gained five games on Wilmington during the month of July, and the lead is down to 6.5 games as of today after gaining two more games this past week alone. After one of the hottest months we've ever seen, where Wilmington went 24-5 in June, they are now 11-18 since. They still have the fourth best record overall, and top record in the Domestic, so we wouldn't worry too much yet. Sometimes water just has to find its level. Montreal meanwhile is 11 games over .500 since the start of June as they just keep chugging along. Led by potential Stout Slugger Andy 'Turk' Christman, who's hitting .338 with 18 HR and 62 RBI and has turned into one of the best defensive catchers in the league, they should once again make a deep playoff run weather they win the division or not.

    3. Looks like Maine starter Dave Hunt earned himself a payday after starting the season 10-3 with a 3.32 ERA and 124 ERA+. Originally undrafted out of high school he signed a minor league contract with Wilmington in 2050, but was released after they relocated to Indy. He then caught on with Batavia and was a top prospect in the league, but was allowed to walk after becoming a minor league FA. Denver scooped him up with a four year/$16m contract in 2056, where over two years he went 14-28 with a 5.13 ERA. He was then traded to Maine where he finished out the '58 season and signed a $24m extension after going 6-8 with a 2.95 ERA in 2059. Since then he hasn't posted a losing record and the 31 year old is currently having his best year since that '59 season. Hunt currently has the Guides in the final Domestic WC spot, and only four games back in the Ale. Okay back to the payday! On August 1st he signed another extension, this time for $81m over four years. Not bad for an undrafted kid from Greater Upper Marlboro in Maryland.

    4. Welcome to the league Dawson Overton. The 21 year old was a first round pick by the Voodoo in 2060 and made his BLB debut this past week. In six games he hit .333 with two home runs, three runs driven in, and stole his first base. He also started all six games in centerfield where New Orleans hopes he plays the next decade. Drafted fifth overall he's another young centerfielder who can cover ground in the outfield, hit with power, and steal bases with ease. After starting the season in AA he was called up to AAA in June, and hit .310 there with 5 HR and 19 RBI in just 37 games. Scouts say he's a "plus plus defender", and has "plus power potential." That's a lot of plusses that should help the 56-51 Voodoo make the postseason.

    5. What's on tap? This week we have interleague and we get to see the top team in the Domestic take on the top team in the Import as Wilmington travels to Washington for three. Can the Wildcats put a stop to their downturn against the Bats? It won't be easy as Washington is a ridiculous 41-11 at home. We also get to see Montreal at Denver in another potential Brewmasters Cup match-up. Finally there is a good series between 53-54 Maine and 55-53 New York. Both are holding onto the final Wild Card spot in their respective leagues with all their might and are looking to get, or stay, above .500. Streak wise Washington and Windy City have won five straight, Baltimore has lost five straight, and Cali is in the midst of a six game slide.
