After a long off-season and short Spring Training, it's good to be back...back that is for season 83 of Brewers League Baseball! With week one down it looks like it's the year of the Canadians as they went 6-1. Toronto won the Brew in 2059, and barely lost to Montreal in last years DLCS after dropping game seven on the road. With Chase Calhoun and Brian Wheat both in their early 20's they won't be going anywhere for a while. The other top team was Pawtucket who went 6-1. After going to the postseason every year from 2045 to 2054, and winning two Brewmaster Cups, they are looking to go back again for the first time in seven seasons. On the other side of life Maine and LAD went 1-6 while Hartford went 0-7. Mama said there would be weeks like this.

Performance of the Week
P JaQuan Wamugunda - Yesterday against the Whalers, Wamugunda was just one strike away from a no-hitter with Gene Grimes up to bat. He hit all of nine home runs last season, but smacked one over the left field wall on a full-count to wreck the history books. In the end Toronto won 5-1 and Wamugunda is now 1-0 with a 1.06 ERA in two starts this season.
Prospect of the Week
RF Zane Sirignano - With the draft coming up, this kid looks like a sure fire top three pick. He's a 4x NCAA All-Star, and over 187 total games at Oregon State he's hitting .398/.454/.789 with 76 HR, 193 RBI and a 200 OPS+. The 6'4 slugger hails from Pennsylvania and should be able to hold down a spot in right field for a decade or more.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Hats off to Parker Lee for launching his 400th career home run on opening day against Batavia. The 30 year old (where does the time go) was a second round pick by the Bats back in 2048 out of Alec C Pope High School. In 2049 he proceeded to hit 49 home runs in the Rookie League, and made his debut for the Bats in 2051. He's hit 33 or more home runs nine straight seasons, and hit 40 or more home runs in seven of those. At 6'9 he's one of the, if not the most intimidating batter in the BLB. He's the 67th player in the history of the league to reach 400 home runs, and we have a feeling he won't be slowing down for at least a few more seasons.
2. A second hats off to Baltimore ace Jannero Peter who reached 3000 strikeouts on opening day against Philly. The 33 year old is in his 13th season with the Bulldogs, where he's been named to seven All-Star games and won two Pale Ales. Originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2045 draft as the 46th overall pitcher taken, he turned into quite the find to say the least. His 62.3 career WAR is 28.5 points higher than the next pitcher from that year. Did we mention that pitcher happens to be Baltimore's eighth round pick, Oliver Lanham. Talk about a late round scouting success story.
3. Baltimore also took a pitcher in the first round of the 2045 draft...do you know who? Probably not because nobody else does either. Well it was Brian Roberts, who was taken with the 14th overall pick. Roberts is actually in the BLB playing for Baltimore as a reliever. He made his debut three seasons ago, and so far in 95 career games he's 4-4 with 4 saves and a 3.37 ERA. That's better than their 4th round pick, Todd Curtis. He's currently in AAA and at 33 years old has never played in the majors. Both of those though beat the worst first round pick of that draft, Pittsburgh drafting Phil O'Connell with the 13th overall pick. In 2052, his one year in the BLB, O'Connell was 4-9 with a 4.50 ERA when he was lost for the season due to needing elbow surgery. After struggling in the minors for a few seasons afterwords he finally called it quits in 2056 at the young age of 28 years old.
4. Rick Anderson of the Roadrunners stole six bases this past week, giving him 832 for his career. He's now just six behind Julian 'Skeeter' Ludin who swiped five bases of his own last week. Both of them are set to fly by Preston 'Cowboy' Capps, who retired last season with 861 stolen bases to his name. How long until the catch and pass Richie 'Powder' van Luik, who holds the record with 935. Once thought an untouchable number, Anderson is just 33 years old while Ludin in 35. They also show no signs of slowing down as Anderson stole 66 bases last year, while Ludin was first in the Import with 92.
5. What's on tap? Out first interleague match-up of the season features Denver at Montreal, New Orleans at Phoenix, and Wilmington at Batavia. Streak wise New Orleans has won five straight, Toronto has won four straight, and Olin 'Chief' Keele has an 18 game hitting streak.
