  • The 2060 Daily Keg - Week 6

    05/17/2060

Those Pilots are scorching hot as they put up a 6-0 week with sweeps of Dallas and Montreal. In the process of becoming the Lager's 'Daddy' they moved to a ridiculous 31-8 on the season, and have built a six game lead on the Roadrunners. These aren't your fathers Roadrunners though, as Phoenix is 25-14 and looking for second straight playoff birth, and fourth in five seasons. For now though they are holding on for dear life in hopes Seattle finally cools off. The other top weeks were California and Syracuse who each went 5-1. The Kodiaks GM decided to sell, sell, sell after their disastrous start, and now they've won nine out of their last 13 games. Meanwhile the Snappers are 25-14 and in second place in the Ale. On the other side of life Maine and Caroline went 1-5. Sometimes you are the sparrow, sometimes you are the snail.

    Performance of the Week

P Braydon Lynn - In the "what exactly makes a pitching prospect" file comes Lynn, a 6th round pick from 2054. He's now 6-0 with a 2.63 ERA on the season, and smoked Washington with a two-hit shutout on May 13th. Over the nine innings he walked just one, while striking out 11. Coaches said he worked hard on his movement this off-season, and scouts agree. He throws five pitches, including a knee buckling curve, and can hit 99 mph on the gun. At only 26 years old he looks like a solid contributor for the Whalers for years to come.

    Prospect of the Week

P Tony Whitley - The youngest pitcher in the top prospect list was the Kodiaks first round pick last year, and is currently in the Rookie League. At just 18 years old he has a long way to go, but scouts think he can be a "top of the rotation starter" down the road. This year in five starts he's 1-2 with a 5.70 ERA, but he's only given up one home run in 23.2 innings pitched.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. We can't remember the last time we looked in the standings in May and Washington was at the bottom of the Stout. The Bats are an unheard of 13-27 and are last in nearly every single pitching category. Washington has missed the playoffs twice since 2017, and they had winning records both times. In fact the last time they had a losing record was 1999, when they went 76-86. This is the most storied franchise in league history, with 68 playoff appearances and 12 Brewmaster Cups. At the beginning of the year they had over 700 career wins more than Baltimore, who was in second place. They've also had 327 players become All-Stars, 91 more than second place Pittsburgh. The real stat to give you an idea how dominant this franchise has been is that they are 2,323 games over .500. Second place is Seattle...at 966. Just unreal.

    2. Congrats to 39 year old Aubrey 'Gypsy' Albano who recorded his 1000th extra-base hit this past week, the 34th player in the history of the league to do so. The scouting discovery out of the Philippines in 2037 made his BLB debut in 2041 for Pawtucket, where he played for nine seasons. He then went to Toronto for a year, before joining Syracuse for eight seasons. He then went back to Pawtucket midway through 2058 before signing with Dallas in 2059. He's one of the most decorated players in league history, as he's been named to the All-Star team twelve times, a Designated Driver nine times, and a DWI winner three times. Lifetime he's put up slash line of .334/.336/.444 with 3,728 hits, 821 doubles, 134 triples, and 337 stolen bases.

    3. No one loves zone rating more than the Keg, as winning and defense go hand in hand, so lets take a look at where we are this year. Well it appears Windy City is leading the league with a +16.43 ZR...and has the worst record in the league at 10-29. In fact out of the top ten teams in ZR, only Baltimore, Phoenix, and Seattle have winning records. Our theory has gone up in flames. At least the overall ZR of the league is at +7.02. The last season that finished with a positive overall rating was 2052, when the average came in at a whopping +23.38 thanks to LAD (+61.29), California (+56.49) and Maine (+40.11). We are only about 25% of the way through the season, so we'll see how things shake out.

    4. Brian Wheat had a pretty good season last year as you can see below. After a slow start, he seems to be picking back up as he hit .480 with 3 HR and 9 RBI last week. Toronto will need it as they have six players on the injured list, including four pitchers. Back to the reigning Stout Slugger though. Wheat is now hitting .329/.398/.550 with 7 HR, 24 RBI, 13 SB, and a 149 OPS+. A week and a half ago he also went for the cycle against Pawtucket, the first in the league this season. The Canadians are currently 18-20, and 6.5 games back in the Lager. With a pitching staff that is 10th in ERA and 9th in runs allowed, they need Wheat to get hot and stay hot.

    5. What's on tap? The heavyweights of the Stout meet for three games as Baltimore heads north on I95 to New York City. The Bulldgos are 23-15 and trail the Cyclones by four games, and New York took the first series meeting two games to one. Baltimore is back to its normal tricks as they are first in hits allowed, second in runs allowed, and second in starters ERA. They are also first in batting average, but aren't getting the runners home as they are fifth in runs scored. New York is the opposite as they are first in hits, extra-base hits, and runs scored, while being first in bullpen ERA. They've slowed down a little in May though. After going 19-6 in April, they are just 9-6 this month. Streak wise Seattle has won seven in a row, Syracuse has won five straight, and Ryan Carr (SEA) and Logan Kyle (PAW) have 13 game hitting streaks going.
