  • The 2059 Daily Keg - Week 11

    06/23/2059

And we're back...and it appears Baltimore is still dominating the rest of the league by going 6-1. The Bulldogs have a leagues best 51 wins as the defending champs hold on to the Power Rankings lead. The winner of last week though was New Orleans who went 6-0 with sweeps of Montreal and Pittsburgh. The Voodoo are now only one game under .500 as they are trying to put together back to back winning months after a dreadful April. The other top teams were Cali, Indy, Seattle, and New York who all went 5-2. On the other side of life Hartford went 1-6 while Batavia and Pittsburgh went 1-5.

    Performance of the Week

RF Jared Lewis - The 2055 fifth round pick is 23 games into his first BLB season and appears to be quite comfortable in his new setting. This past week against Hartford he had four hits, a home run, drove in three, and scored three times during a 15-1 beat down of the Whalers. He's now hitting .325 with 4 HR, 16 RBI and a 137 OPS+.

    Prospect of the Week

C Jeremy 'Bully' Goodson - Drafted 7th overall, 'Bully' fell into the Millers lap and debuted as the #2 overall prospect in the league. The 17 year old is only bested by the 19 year old catcher Andy 'Turk' Christman, who was the first overall pick of the 2057 draft by Montreal. Goodson is still extremely raw, and in his first week in the Rookie League hit .095, but scouts think he can be an elite starting catcher down the road. Looks like the BLB has some exciting times once again for the men behind the plate.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. It's hard to believe but Joey Robertson is still playing baseball at the age of 42. Drafted first overall in 2034 by California, he played 14 seasons for the Kodiaks where he was a 9x All-Star, 4x DWI and 4x Designated Driver, and helped Cali win the 2043 Brewmasters Cup. He then was let walk in free agency, and played for Santo Domingo, Maine, Indy, and Seattle before coming back to California in 2053. Seven seasons later he's still on the team. Since that time he's reached (as of last week) 450 career home runs and 1000 extra base hits. He's the 32nd player in the history of the league to reach the EBH milestone, and the 35th player in the history of the league to reach 450 home runs. No one does 'sentimental' like California.

    2. Speaking of records, Syracuse outfielder Charlie 'Mailman' Jones is on pace to smash the single season triple record of 22 held by Ricky 'Heartthrob' Figueroa, Dennis Daley, and Chase 'Havoc' Calhoun. Jones currently has 15 triples and is on pace to hit 34! Figueroa set the record back in 2029, and it's been going strong for 30 seasons now. 'Mailman' though is known for his ability to hit the ball in the gap, and his ability to fly around the bases...which bodes well for three-bagger's. The 19th overall pick from the 2055 draft is hitting .344 and is on pace for 52 doubles, 34 triples, 21 HR, 78 RBI, and 55 SB. Sounds like a potential Stout Slugger to us.

    3. In a rare feat during the month of June the division leads are 9.5 (Ale), 3.5 (Lager), 10.5 (Stout) and 9.5 (Bock). We can't remember a time when we had almost double digit leads in three quarters of the league before we hit July. The good news for people who like drama (at least in the standings) is that in the Domestic five teams are within 4.5 games of the final Wildcard spot, and in the Import three teams are withing five games of the final Wild Card spot. In fact even Denver, who is last in the league at 25-46, has a 0.1% chance of making the postseason according to our friends at Stats+. Never say never Bulls fans!

    4. Connor Cook of Seattle is still on fire as his amazing season continues. The BLB leader in wins and ERA is now 12-1 with a 1.11 ERA in 14 starts. His ridiculous 351 ERA+ is 170 points higher than second place, Toronto starter Drew Durham. The fifth year starters previous ERA+ high was 128 back in 2057. To be fair to Cook though, he's a winner. With records of 14-7, 10-2, 11-8, and now 12-1 the Pilots played their cards right when they traded for him back in 2056.

    5. What's on tap? It's the battle of the 1-2's this week as we get to see California at Seattle, Montreal at Wilmington, and Baltimore at New York. Streak wise New Orleans has won six straight, Pittsburgh and Batavia have lost four straight, Baltimore stars James 'Handyman' Hylton and Justin Castiglioni have 15 game hitting streaks, Kyle Siebert (CAR) has homered in four straight, and Connor 'Fuego' Cook hasn't lost in 13 starts.
