04/29/2058
We close our eyes only for a moment, and the week is gone. We're already on week three of the 2058 season and it was the Voodoo who went shooting up the PR with a 6-1 week. They swept the Wildcats and took three of four against Maine, and now lead the Lager by 1.5 games. Second place was a three-way as Hartford, Indy, and New York all went 5-2. The Cyclones have the best record in the league at 14-5, yet only hold a half game lead over Washington. Them's the breaks when you play in the Stout.

Performance of the Week
P Jannero Peter - Still in April and we have our first no-no of the season as Peter dominated the Kodiaks on April 25th. Over the course of the game he only walked two while striking out 15, and the Bulldogs barely won 1-0. It is the second no-hitter of his career, and the fifth time he's K'd 15 or more opposing batters. Not bad for a seventh round pick.
Prospect of the Week
1B Hayden Jones - The Bats picked Jones in the second round of last years draft and it's good to see things working out for Washington. So far in 11 Rookie League games he's hitting .325 with 5 HR and 8 RBI and is on pace for a 7.0 WAR. The 21 year old was the 2055 CCBL Outstanding Hitter before a smattering of injuries held him to 31 and 26 games in 2056 and 2057. If he can stay healthy could he be another Parker Lee?
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Two days before Peter demolished California batters, Kelvin Ellis beat up on poor Batavia. In a complete game shutout he allowed four hits, no walks, and struck out nine as Baltimore won 6-0. Both Peter and Ellis are seventh round picks, Peter in 2045 and Ellis in 2050. At only 25 years old, Ellis is 3-1 with a 1.95 ERA and is seriously challenging Tobs ace Charlie Spence for the top pitcher in baseball. Considering the OSA has Baltimore with three of the top five pitchers in the league only makes the Stout even more insane.
2. It's no secret that the latest players coming into the league are 'enhanced' due to modern medicine and training technology. Some of the young stars we see have a chance to dominate the BLB for years to come. Example number one...Toronto's second basemen Chase Calhoun. The 21 year old was the fourth overall pick of last years draft and he's already tearing up the league. In 19 games he's hitting .357 with 4 HR, 12 RBI, and 19 stolen bases. He's on pace to steal 162 bases and could mirror what 1B Cory 'Boy Scout' Petit did in 2052 when he was the New Brew and Stout Slugger. Between 'Havoc' and Toronto's second round pick from last year, Kelvin Kenney (8 HR, 20 RBI), the Canadians are 11-8 and serious playoff contenders.
3. The minor leagues are 11 games in as the future of the BLB (in some cases) get their shot at making an impact. So far the Rookie League Austin Rustlers are the top dog with a 10-1 record. Last year they were 87-33 and had the best record for any minor league franchise. Alas they lost in the playoffs, but it might mean that big things are ahead in San Jose for the Kodiaks. Speaking of big things how about Freedom 21 year old slugger Troy Glenn, who's playing for their A ball team, the Fort Myer Capitols. In 11 games he's smacked eight home runs while driving in 16. His OPS of 1.526 is pretty good for a fourth round pick in the 2054 draft.
4. The draft is approaching. This year Batavia holds the top pick, followed by Philly, Maine, California, and Denver. The hottest prospect in the league happens to be 17 year old Rory Elia Jr, who's currently a senior for the Chandler HS Wolverines. He smacked his 50th career HS home run earlier this month, and this season he hit .348 with 11 HR and 37 RBI. Unfortunately for him Chandler went 16-24 and missed the postseason, but being a top five pick in the upcoming draft should help some of the hurt.
5. What's on tap? This week we get a barn burner in the Stout as Washington heads to Carolina. The 2058 Stout is trying to emulate the 2057 Lager, as currently five of the six teams have winning records and Philly is 8-11. So far this young season Washington is first in hits, runs scored, ERA, and starters ERA. Meanwhile the Tobs are struggling pitching, but offensively they are first in walks and second in home runs. In the Domestic we get to see New Orleans travel north to Hartford. Both teams are 13-7 as New Orleans is dominating when it comes to pitching. In the DL they are first in hits allowed, runs allowed, and starters ERA. Streak wise no team has won or lost more than four in a row, and Beau Pruett (SEA) has a 13 game hitting streak.
