The 78th season of the BLB is underway. Hartford was the only team to start the season with six wins and they sit alone atop the Power Rankings. Maine, Baltimore, and Seattle put together strong 5-2 weeks to each sit atop their division. Leaders through the first week were Batavia and Phoenix who each bombed 14 home runs, while Baltimore scored 44 runs. The other end of the spectrum had Toronto and California scoring 17 and 18 runs respectively. On the pitching side, to no one’s surprise Carolina led with 86 strikeouts and Syracuse had an astounding team WHIP of only 0.93.
Power Rankings
Performance of the Week
SP Charlie Spence– How do you follow up a season where you set the BLB single season strikeout record you might ask? Maybe throwing 7.2 innings and striking out 11 in your 2056 season debut. That’s decent I suppose. But, how about rolling out in start #2 and throwing 8 one hit innings and striking out 15! Facing Windy City, Spence proved to be almost untouchable, as the Tobs rolled the Bulls 3-1. In the contest, Spence struck out Tommy Tuten 3 times and 5 other players twice. Is a 400 strikeout season in the cards?
Injury of the Week
3B Julian Irwin - In-N-Out Field went stone silent this week as Julian Irwin ripped a single in the fourth inning against Washington and pulled up lame after running through the bag. Although fans fear the worst for the reigning IL Stout Slugger and the leader of the Kodiak offence, team officials believe it is just a slight muscle strain and Irwin should be back in the lineup in a couple of weeks.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. The draft pool has been revealed for the 2056 season. GMs are salivating at the prospect of finding some incredible two-way talent. Although very young, the top of the draft is filled with players with the potential to be DWI winners and DD winners. Some of the names in the running for the top pick are CF Brian Wheat, LF Walter Muller, and CF Teddy Burch.
2. It’s the time of the year to look at some fun extrapolations. Sage Emerson and Zeke Lebron are both on pace for 93 home runs. Lawrence Gatzioudis is on pace for 17.9 WAR and 351 hits! Rounding out some fun offensive numbers are James Goebel on pace for 69 triples and Vince Cox and Joel Staelens are on pace for 116 RBI. On the pitching side, the aforementioned Charlie Spence is on pace for 468 strikeouts! Finally, new Muckdog Tommy Tisthammer is on pace for a ridiculous 13.2 WAR!
3. Next week brings with it the first round of interleague play. There are some tremendous matchups to look forward to this week. An exciting battle of division leaders Seattle and Santo Domingo highlight the week. Another interesting series is last year’s best team, the Washington Bats at home against this year’s best team, the Hartford Whalers!
4. Looking at the Top Prospects List the top 8 players are all pitchers. The lone batter in the top 10 is Montreal prospect Zechariah Norkus. Word out of Montreal is that the 2052 third overall pick will be up sooner rather than later. Since being draft 4 years ago he has slowly made his way through the minors and a short stop in AAA may be in store. It looks like brighter days are ahead as the Exports have a bevy of young talent about to invade the BLB.
5. Let’s finish off the DK by looking at Top Players List. Thirteen of the top 40 players are 25 or younger. With some of the BLB’s best starting to hit the twilight of their career, it’ll be interesting to see which young guns take over as the BLB’s best. The DK is pretty sure that Evan Turner will spend multiple seasons as the game’s top hitter. As for the pitching side, it looks like Charlie Spence will hold down the #1 spot for years to come. Although, Denver’s Bad, Bad, Levi Brown might have something to say about it.
