  • The 2053 Daily Keg - Week 18

    08/11/2053

Seattle sweeps the Drillers, and jets into the top spot for this weeks Power Rankings, as they go 5-1 against the Domestic League. Throw in Montreal and Indy who went 5-1 and there were a few happy fan bases. The happiest though was Santo Domingo who went 6-0 with sweeps of Baltimore and Caroline and have now won eight straight. The Rum Runners are now 61-52 and a near playoff lock once again. On the flip side Carolina went 0-6 to lose their seventh straight game and drop their playoff odds down to 78%. Throw in Denver and Toronto who went 1-5 and there were a few not so happy fan bases as well. Some team leaders: Montreal scored 40 runs (LAD 8), Seattle allowed 10 runs (CAR 39), Batavia hit 11 HR (CAL/TOR 1), and opponents hit .193 vs Pawtucket (DEN .333).

    Performance of the Week

P JaQuan Wamugunda - After starting out the season blazing hot he had a rough stretch in late June and July where he lost five out of six starts. This past week though against Maine he turned in the 13th best performance of the season when he went seven innings, allowed no runs, three hits, and struck out 15 batters. The Freedom won 2-0 and Wamugunda is now 11-7 with a 3.54 ERA and 115 ERA+ on the season.

    Prospect of the Week

SS Max Johnson - Ranked the best overall player in the NCAA by the OSA, Johnson is a do it all infielder who could could play SS/2B/3B at a high level, while contributing on offense as well. Throw in above average speed and the 19 year old could be a top five pick in next years draft. Over his three years at Baylor he's hit .331/.433/.506 with 19 HR, 106 RBI, and 40 SB while posting a 133 OPS+.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. Unlike the rest of the divisions, the Ale now has four teams within 4.5 games of the division lead. Pittsburgh is still in first, with Indy now moving into second four games back, and Pawtucket and Maine 4.5 back. In the Lager the Drillers have a 95% chance to win the division, while Seattle and Cali are split near 50/50 in the Bock. Meanwhile in the good old Stout the Bats are at a cool 100% to secure a first round bye after they have now built a ridiculous 17 game lead over Carolina.

    2. Reliver Lucas 'One Dog' Sharp for Dallas leads the Domestic in wins with 14, and is second overall in the league behind Baltimore ace Jannero Peter. Sharp has appeared in 40 games, started none, yet continues to get the W. This is the 26 year olds first year in the BLB after being the 135th overall pick by Dallas in 2047. He is now one win away from tying the record set by Jon Vejar for LAD in 2007. Vejar appeared in 80 games that season and went 15-4 with a 2.87 ERA.

    3. Speaking of luck how about Baltimore pitcher Nathan 'Missing Link' McKelvey. The 5x All-Star and 2x Pale Ale winner is 2-11 this season...with a 3.81 ERA and 108 ERA+. His QS of .70 is 10th best in the league, yet his 2.3 RSG is fifth worst among starters. Some of his losses this year were 3-4, 2-3, 0-3, 2-3, 1-2, 2-3, and 0-3. He's often seen crying at his locker after the game using 100 dollar bills from his $28,800,000 salary this season as tissues.

    4. Record watch. Dennis Brantley (NO) is now on pace for 83 doubles, or 17 more than the current record set by Enrique Ferreira in 2007. He already has 58 and the record is 66. Meanwhile Kynan Shaw (SEA) is on pace for 23 triples, or one more than the current record set by Ricky 'Heartthrob' Figueroa in 2029. Finally don't forget about everyone's favorite 44 year old Pat 'Melody' Nunes who sits at 612 career home runs, tied with Jamie O'Hearn for second all-time.

    5. What's on tap? We have some good series this week with Indy at Dallas for four, and Washington at Seattle for four. Dallas has taken six of seven against the Clowns so far this season, and with this being the last match-up of the regular season it's time for Indy to show what they are made of. Meanwhile Seattle holds a 4-3 advantage over Washington as the Pilots and their ridiculous -7 PYT do everything then can to catch California. Streak wise Tyson Velez (HAR) has a 17 game hitting streak, Aubrey 'Gypsy' Albano (SYR) has a 14 game hitting streak, and Colby 'Mirror' Hullinger has a 13 game hitting streak.
