  • The 2052 Daily Keg - Week 17

    7/29/2052

The Freedom continue to play lights out as they go 6-1 and take over the Stout lead from the Bats. Philly is now 9-1 in their last 10, and 17-6 in the month of July. We suppose that things such as Freedom and July just go good together. Other big weeks were Indy who went 5-1, and Denver who went 5-2. Indy is now 51-49 as every single Ale team is .500 or above. Meanwhile Denver is making up some ground after a disastrous June and July. On the flip side Montreal went 1-5 after hitting .241 and allowing their opponents to hit .315.

    Performance of the Week

3B Julian Irwin, CF Jakob Lopez - We had a tie this week for the #1 hitting performance of the season as Irwin and Lopez had the hot bats. On July 24th against Batavia, Irwin smashed three home runs, had four hits and drove in seven as Washington won 8-1. Meanwhile on July 26th, Lopez had two home runs, four hits, and drove in five during a 15-0 drubbing of the Millers. Both players finished with game scores of 117, seven points higher than the previous high score of the season.

    Prospect of the Week

2B Vince Cox - The 8th overall pick of this years draft by Wilmington is already in A ball and just lighting it up. After hitting .309 in 24 Rookie League games, he was moved up to the Hit Kings a few weeks ago and is living up to their name. So far in 13 games he is hitting .404/.472/.681 with 3 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR and 6 RBI. Coaches love his work ethic and believe the 20 year old could be in the majors by next season. Looks like the Wildcats have a bright future.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. We briefly mentioned the 15-0 beat down the Drillers gave the Millers no part in thanks to Jakob Lopez. Well it was also thanks in a big part to starting pitcher Christian Vines. The 34 year old was signed by the Millers earlier in the season and got called up after Phil O'Connell was lost for the season due to surgery to remove bone chips. On this fateful start he lasted 3.1 innings, gave up seven hits and seven runs, but he did strike out six players. After his first start, which was a win, he is now 1-1 with a 10.38 ERA and 38 ERA+. For those that don't remember Vines won four straight Pale Ales from 2043-2046 and was one of the most dominating pitchers the league has ever seen. He then started to develop control issues that he could never recover from. Lifetime he is 143-57 with a 2.66 ERA and 150 ERA+.

    2. Judean Dang is having a rough go of things in Carolina this season. This past week against Baltimore he went seven innings, allowed three runs on four hits, and struck out 15 batters...and took the L as the Bulldogs won 3-2. This is his 10th straight loss and on the season Dang is 3-16 with a 5.12 ERA and 77 ERA+. He came into the league from Thailand back in 2045 but wasn't signed until 2047 by the Tobs for $2.6m. He dominated A ball and was called up to Carolina in 2051 at 23 years old. Last season he was 10-13 with a 4.08 ERA and showed flashes of brilliance. Here's hoping for him (and the Tobs) that it's just a sophomore slump.

    3. We talked about him earlier in the season, but there is currently one player in the entire BLB with an OPS above 1.00...and it's Voodoo rookie Cory 'Boy Scout' Petit at 1.007. The New Brew/Stout Slugger candidate is now hitting .384/.425/.583 with 14 HR, and 70 RBI. He's also walked 24 times while only striking out 20 times. He was selected to the All-Star game earlier this month, and just before that had a six for six day against the Freedom. He's on pace for a 7.3 WAR and could be one of the best for easily the next decade. Once again we shall reiterate that New Orleans got a steal signing him out of France for just $6.5m.

    4. Congrats to new Hall of Fame inductees Sheng 'Admiral' Jong, J.J. Plumley, Jimmy Jeffs, and Harry Elliott. With the voting tallied up at the All-Star break, they will now be enshrined this week in the Brewers League Baseball Hall of Fame. Four other players on the ballot did not make it, but had enough votes to try again in 2054. Those four, Tom Stark, Kevin Alston, Dave Nichols, and Zachary Bradley, will be joined by Rory Elia, Erik Foley, Pat 'Baja' Arballo, and J.D. 'Hurricane' Rice. Sounds like another amazing potential class.

    5. What's on tap? We get a fun one this week as Seattle travels to California for three games. The Pilots lead the Kodiaks by a half game in the Bock, and are 5-1 against them this season. After this meeting they have one more series against each other in September. Streak wise Indy and Philly are on five game winning streaks, Ray Seevers (SYR) has a 14 game hitting streak, and Chandler Magnuson (CAL) hasn't lost in 10 straight starts.
