All is right in the world as Washington ends the week at the top of the Power Rankings after going 6-0 with sweeps of Toronto and New Orleans. Other impressive weeks saw Seattle and Dallas go 5-1 to put pressure on the leaders of their respective divisions. Leaders of the week saw Pittsburgh bash 15 home runs, Batavia steal 16 bases, and Washington score 49 runs. At the other end, Windy City and Philadelphia went 1-5.

    Performance of the Week

SP John Phelps – One of the Dinos lesser-known starters put up one of the top pitching performances of the year this week. Facing the league’s best team, Phelps carried a no hitter into the ninth inning. With history at his fingertips, he induced Darius Brown to ground out. Then after a walk, Clarke Cunningham quieted the home crowd with a rocket double into left field to end the no-hit bid. In all, Phelps twirled a dazzling 8.1 innings, with 1 hit and 7 strikeouts in the 7-0 whitewash.

    Injury of the Week

In a change of pace, this week we will be looking at a team. In the span of a couple weeks Seattle has lost 40% of their starting rotation. A few weeks ago, Elija Hugie felt a pop in his elbow. If that wasn’t enough, this past week, Khadeen Nakamura felt the same pop. According to team doctors both pitchers suffered torn flexor tendons and will be out for 12-13 months. That means a lot will be asked of recently acquired Cayden Wittmeyer.

    Prospect of the Week

RF Aron ‘Bolts’ Lali – With a new GM in town, the Racers have seemingly turned things around in a few short weeks. A return to consistent winning at the BLB level, and a renewed focus on scouting has Racer fans excited about the future. Indianapolis scouts returned from a trip to Nambia with the team’s #1 prospect in tow. Scouts rave about his power potential and his off the charts work ethic. Expect big things in Racer land in a few years from Bolts!

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. The injury bug struck hard this week. Although the playoffs teams seem fairly set the final position of teams may be greatly impacted by the IL List this week. Along with the aforementioned Nakamura (12-13 months), the league also lost SP Dawson Lamb (4-5 months), Vince Ridgeway (4-5 weeks), Dwan Tamarovsky (4-5 weeks), Kolton Watson (8 weeks), Oscar MacDonald (3-4 months), Oliver Daly (4-5 months), Toby Chandler (5 months), and Kaleb Gergely (4-5 weeks). What a rough week for the trainers in the BLB.

    2. Are the division races over? With 7 ½ weeks left in the BLB schedule it is looking like the division winners may already be salted away. Although they are 3-7 in their last ten games, Toronto has a 6 ½ game lead in the Lager. Pawtucket sewed up the Ale months ago and currently sits 11 games up on Pittsburgh. The Washington Bats, riding a 7 game win streak, have roared out to a 9 ½ game lead. The one race we have hope for, in terms of excitement, is the brutal Bock. The Kodiaks lead the Pilots by a measly 3 ½ games and they still have 6 more games against each other.

    3. Are the Wilmington Clowns up for sale. In a bizarre move this week, GM Ryan, tried to enter his entire roster in the next BLB draft. This outside the box thinking was immediately struck down by the BLB higher ups. Not to be outdone, the Clowns GM immediately placed the roster on the trade block. Not sure what is going on, but we’ll keep the loyal readers of the Keg in the know as this story develops.

    4. Looking at the Top Player’s List, Jannero Peters is the only pitcher under the age of 25. The hard throwing Bulldog has two elite pitches and routinely cracks 100 mph with fastballs that leave scouts dreaming. The bigger story is the inability of young pitchers in today’s BLB to adapt quickly to the rigors of life in the show. Young pitchers today seem to struggle early and often. Here’s hoping that the next great crop of young starters are just around the corner.

    5. Let’s finish off by taking a look at a few streaks around the BLB. Sam Carruthers and J.D. de Leon are both on 8 game winning streaks. Jonas Harville is on a 10-game losing streak. On the offensive side of the ball, Neall Rabah has hit a home run in three consecutive games.
