Performance of the Week
P Norm Aouita - The now Red Jacket is 3-0 with his new team and pitched the #2 performance of the season on May 27th against Windy City. Over the course of the game he allowed only two hits, no runs, one walk and K'd seven in a 7-0 victory. The 31 year old was discovered out of Tanzania in 2035 by Carolina, traded to Seattle in 2037, traded to Phoenix in 2047, and then just traded to Batavia. He went to the All-Star game from '43-'45 and looks like he might be going back again.
Prospect of the Week
P Chase Mellas - The 23 year old was a second round pick in 2044 by New Orleans and has worked his way up to AA. Currently in eight starts he's 6-1 with a 2.01 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 172 ERA+. With a 101 mph fastball and devastating slider it's time to see what he can do against AAA and then maybe some big league talent.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Congrats to the Brewster Whitecaps for winning the CCBL Cape Cup with a 2-0 sweep over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Brewster finished the season at 30-19 and tied for the best record in the Cape Cup league. In the playoffs they went 6-1 to win their 5th title and first since 2029. Meanwhile in the College World Series we have Long Beach and Texas tied at one game a piece with the final game being played today. Long Beach won the Big West and had the best record in college, while Texas won the Big 12 and had the second best record in the league. Finally last week at the High School level the Jefferson City Jaguars won their 5th title and first one in 30 years. In the playoffs they went 8-1 and outscored their opponents by 53 runs over those nine games.
2. All-Star voting has begun. The game will be played July 15th at an undisclosed location as of now. Rumors are that it might be at the Field of Dreams in Iowa, but there has been no confirmation yet. The first published vote count will come out next week and we can't wait to see some of the old-timers (Robert Jessee and his12th appearance?), as well as some possible first timers. We will keep you updated as the votes are tallied.
3. Batavia has been the cream of the crop for May as they are 19-7 for the month. They lead the league in runs allowed and are fifth in runs scored. Pawtucket is second at 18-8, while LAD, Washington and California are all 18-9. Meanwhile poor Santo Domingo is 5-22, Montreal is 5-21, and Carolina is 5-20. The Exports have allowed over six runs a game while the Rum Runners have scored just barely over two a game. Player wise Melchior Werth (NY) has hit nine home runs, Gage Hay (Bat) has driven in 21, Chadd Chua (Pho) has stolen 16 bases, Stan Dotson (Sea) is 5-0, and Joel Sawyer (Bat) has allowed only six runs in 34 innings pitched.
4. Pittsburgh and Indy squared off yesterday and both teams scored two runs in the 7th inning. They didn't score again until the Racers did in the bottom of the 11th. It started with a single by Devin Blank off of Gavin Weakley, then the Millers brought in former closer Scott Gomez. He gave up another single before striking out two straight batters. A close 3-2 pitch was called a ball and he walked LaTrivis Chojnacki to load the bases. Up stepped Raymond Dixon and after a strike and ball the count was 1-1. Gomez then slipped in his next delivery and the umpire shouted 'balk' and pointed at the third base runner. As manager Jamie Hawkes came storming out of the dugout, Blank trotted home with the walk-off balk and poor Weakley picked up the loss.
5. What's on tap? It's the battle of the Import as first place Batavia travels to first place California. In the first match-up the Red Jackets swept the Kodiaks but only by a combined four runs. These two teams are darn near unbeatable at home and around .500 on the road, so it might be Cali's turn to get some revenge. Streak wise Abel 'Stumpy' Valley (Tor) has a 15 game hitting streak, Jesse Baker (Mon) has hit a home run in three straight games, and Chase Cole (Pho) has now lost 11 straight games.
