  • The 2049 Daily Keg - Week 14

    07/12/2049

New York dominates the Domestic with a 6-0 week that featured sweeps of Indy and Montreal. Pittsburgh almost dominates the Import with a 5-1 week that featured a sweep of Denver and taking two of three from LAD. Meanwhile on the other side of life Dallas, Denver, New Orleans, and Maine all went 1-5. Sometimes you're the spider, sometimes you're the snail. Some team leaders for the week: California scored 46 runs and pounded 11 home runs, Philly hit .315 and swiped 20 bases, Baltimore allowed only 17 runs, Philly K'd 67 opposing batters, and Maine allowed opponents to hit .220.

    Performance of the Week

3B Pat 'Melody' Nunes - Apparently the key to keep Nunes happy is to make sure he always plays in a contract year. The 40 year old was signed to a one year contract this off-season by Pittsburgh after they whiffed on several other big name free agents. Not only has he single handily propelled the Millers to a winning season thus far, but he turned in the #1 performance of the season against Denver on July 7th. In five at bats he racked up five hits, three home runs, six RBI and scored three times in a 13-5 victory. One of those home runs was also the 500th of his career. Have yourself a day old man.

    Prospect of the Week

P Hayden 'Jailhouse' Watkins - Ignore the jersey as Watkins hasn't had time to get his picture taken after being called up to Single A Fort Myers. The 20 year old was the 12th overall pick of the 2046 draft and has moved up from the 91st prospect in the league to 42nd since then. So far in A ball he's started two games and is 1-0 with only two hits allowed, no runs, 16 K, and 4 BB. Coaches love his work ethic and he's known as a 'spark plug' around the locker room.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. Nunes was mentioned but what a career that guy has had. He'll be selected to his 6th All-Star game next week, he's in the running for the Triple Crown, and he's on pace for a ridiculous 8.3 WAR. He's also now 14th all-time in career home runs, and 6th among active players. Some other milestones this past week were Windy City's Dawson Davis getting his 2000th career hit, Wilmington's Phillip Klopf getting his 400th career home run, and New York's Ben Clewley launching his 300th career home run.

    2. Going back to the previous point it's almost hard to believe that there are six active players with more than 500 career home runs in the BLB. JD Rice leads the pack at 603, followed by Robert Jessee at 567, Rory Elia at 525, Marco Taylor at 511, Elmer Caceres at 509, and Nunes at 503. Those six have combined to make 50 All-Star games and win 8 Stout Sluggers.

    3. Chadd Chua is still on pace to steal 97 bases this season, which would give him the single season record over Richie 'Powder' van Luik who had 92 in 2039. That was the year 'Powder' also hit .402. Chua meanwhile is hitting .296 but has been given the green light to run, run, and run some more. His previous single season high was 61 last season when he hit .294.

    4. With Washington acquiring Colby 'Mirror' Hullinger can anyone stop the Bats this season? At 60-33 they have the second best record in the league and in six games 'Mirror' is almost already at half the WAR he earned while in California for 37 games. Washington meanwhile went 22-7 in June, is 8-2 in July, and has an 11 game lead over Batavia in the Stout. It appears that missing the playoffs last season, their second time in 32 years, really lit a fire under the team.

    5. What's on tap? It's a short week as the Domestic and Import do battle on July 16th in the 2049 All-Star game. Throw in the Prospect Game and Home Run Derby and it's a fun week for fans around the nation.
