  • The 2049 Daily Keg - Week 9

    06/07/2049

We had another unicorn this season as Hartford went 7-0 with sweeps of Santo Domingo and Syracuse. The Whalers are now 34-24 and look to be making their first playoff push since 2039, when they won the Brewmasters over Batavia in what many consider the greatest championship series ever. Other top weeks were Washington who went 6-1, and Dallas who went 5-1, while Pawtucket and Pittsburgh went 5-2. On the flip side Syracuse went 0-6, New Orleans went 1-6, and Seattle went 1-5. Some weeks you're the spider, some weeks you're the fly.

    Performance of the Week

3B Ayden Rowland - The 32 year old has been traded three times, and spent a portion of almost every season in the minors, but he still keeps chugging on. This past week against Seattle he turned in the second best hitting performance of the season when he hit three home runs, drove in four, and scored four times in an 11-5 victory. The former 8th overall pick from 2034 has never quite lived up to the billing, but he's known around the league as a prankster and someone who has always contributed to the locker room in a positive way.

    Prospect of the Week

P Tim Stover - The 152nd pick from the 2044 draft by Hartford has worked his way up to AAA where's he 3-5 with a 4.01 ERA and 86 ERA+ in 10 starts so far this season. At only 22 years old he's the #3 overall prospect in the league and the Whalers expect big things in his future. The 6'4 hurler from Alexandria, LA can almost hit triple digits on the gun, seems to never get tired, and is well liked by the coaches in the organization. He looks like a potential steal for a 7th round pick.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. A big congrats to Elmer 'Bane' Caceres who smoked his 500th career home run, and Zeus Alder who cracked his 400th career home run, all this past week. Both bombers are 36 years old, with Alder coming from the 2030 draft and 'Bane' coming from the 2033 draft. Alder spent most of his time with Carolina, where he was a 3x All-Star and helped lead them to a title in 2037. Caceres started his career with New Orleans, but has since played for California, Washington, Toronto, Pittsburgh, and now Denver. He is an 8x All-Star and won the 2041 Stout Slugger.

    2. On June 4th closer Brock Bumbarger of the Bats got paid to the tune of a 5 year/$51m extension. The 28 year old was a 5th round pick by Washington in 2038 and made his BLB debut in 2043. He took over the closer role in 2046 and helped Washington win the Brewmasters. In 2048 he posted an impressive 1.55 ERA to go along with 47 saves, while last year he had 36 saves and a 2.97 ERA. He's a top ten closer in the league and just got paid like one.

    3. Old man Pat 'Melody' Nunes took home the Domestic Batter of the Month for May at the ripe old age of 40 years old. Despised by owners, GM's, managers, scouts, other players, and fans around the league he just keeps on a hitting as he plays for his 10th BLB team. Reports out of Pittsburgh are that he's already asking for a 3 year contract extension worth $69,000,000. Knowing the infamous frugal front office we can only wish him good luck. The 5x All-Star is only nine home runs away from 500 and could finish the season as high as 12th on the all-time list.

    4. Speaking of home run titles, JD 'Hurricane' Rice hit two this past week, his first of the season. After being stashed in the California's minor league system (where stars go to die), he was part of the Hullinger trade that brought him to Dallas. He's now up to 602 career home runs, ten short of tying Jamie O'Hearn's all-time record. With Dallas selling off pieces, and therefore putting together a winning streak, it looks like Rice might get a chance to break the record. The 37 year old who's a 10x All-Star and 3x Stout Slugger deserves at least a chance to try and make history.

    5. What's on tap? How about interleague where the best team from each league squares off. This week we get to see California travel to Pawtucket for a fun three game series. The Patriots have swept the Kodiaks the last two years and have taken 11 of the last 12 games they played. Streak wise the Whalers have won seven in a row, the Snappers have lost six in a row, and LAD's Zion Hilker has a 21 game hitting streak going.
