Performance of the Week
P Dwan Tamarovsky - The 23 year old has staked his claim as the #1 pitcher in the league and furthered it once again on May 27th against Philadelphia. Over the course of the game he allowed one hit, which happened to be a home run, walked none, and struck out 15 in a 7-1 victory over the Freedom. Dwan is now 8-1 with a 2.34 ERA and 173 ERA+ in nine starts this season. He also shaved his sideburns which has contributed greatly to his success as well.
Prospect of the Week
C Cato Flaig - The 1st overall pick of last years draft is still only 19 years old (even though he looks like he's going on 35) and playing in the rookie league for the Fresno Chilies (HAR). So far this year in 35 games he's hitting .298/.370/.458 with a 139 OPS+ and an RTO of 35%.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. It's the last day of May before we hit the dog days of summer and we're already filling out the playoff spots. In the Domestic it already looks like the season is over for Santo Domingo, Indy, Maine, and Syracuse as their playoff odds all sit under 10%. In the Import we have New York, Baltimore, Windy City, and Carolina under 10%, while Denver is at 16%. Obviously there is a lot of baseball left but as of now it doesn't look like we're gonna get that late September drama. Then again we have a long way until the fall so who knows what could be in store.
2. Congrats to the Orleans Firebirds who took home the Cape Cup by defeating the Hyannis Harbor Hawks two games to none. Seventeen year old freshman outfielder Slade Liu was named the MVP. In the series he hit .444 with 1 HR, 4 RBI, and one run scored. In the NCAA the Rice Owls captured their 6th NCAA championship after taking down Long Beach State in the CWS. Senior outfielder Brennan McNinch was named the MVP after hitting .556 with 1 HR and 3 RBI. For the season McNinch hit .428 with 6 HR, 37 RBI and a 177 OBS+. Experts believe he will be a top ten pick in the upcoming BLB draft.
3. Congrats to Rum Runners third basemen Preston 'Cowboy' Capps who racked up his 2000th career hit. The 7x All-Star and 2x BLB champ (does 2048 count?) won the 2047 Stout Slugger and also won the DWI twice, once at short stop and once at third base. He's only 31 years old and if he keeps averaging around 180 hits a season he should break the BLB record of 3546 hits when he's 40. Needless to say he probably won't get there but he could realistically break into the top 25 by the time he's 35.
4. Someone who does have a chance to break the record of hits held by Steve Suarez is Jimmy Jeffs. He also plays for Santo Domingo and is on pace to reach 125 hits this season. That would give him 3,477 career hits and move him into third place all-time, only behind Suarez, Dani Trujillo, and Jose Guzman. It would also put him only 69 hits away from tying the record. At 43 years old, with a body made of glass, can Jeffs hold on and make history...only (father) time will tell.
5. What's on tap? Pawtucket and Toronto continue to stay hot as they have gone 8-2 in their last 10. The Patriots have also won five in a row, the longest active streak, and are an impressive 19-4 at home this season. In the Import and Domestic we also have two 1-2 match-ups as Montreal travels to those pesky Patriots, and Washington travels to Los Angeles. In both of those series they have played four times so far this season and are tied at two games apiece.
