Performance of the Week
DH Marco Taylor - At 35 years old the 7x All-Star and 2040 BLB champion still has the bat to strike fear in opposing pitchers. He did just that on August 28th against Philly when he smacked three home runs and drove in five during an 11-3 Dinos win. On the season Taylor is hitting .277/.318/.529 with 29 HR, 74 RBI, and a 126 OPS+. Over his career he's hit 488 total home runs, 18th all-time, but this was his first ever 3-HR game.
Prospect of the Week
CF Rick Anderson - The 11th overall pick of the 2044 draft by Dallas was sent to Phoenix in the Derek Bell trade and he's now the 15th overall prospect in the league. At 21 years old he has a chance to be one of the best center fielders in the game with his combination of speed, range in the field, and bat. Usually you don't see a 6'6 guy play the way he does, but scouts and coaches agree he could be special.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. And down the stretch they come. With September 1st right around the corner (tomorrow), the largest division lead we have is four, shared by the Lager and Stout. The Canadians and Freedom are lucky enough to hold that honor while in the Ale Pawtucket leads Wilmington by 2.5, and in the Bock the Dinos and Kodiaks are in a dead heat. We still only have four teams out of the twelve playoff participants with a playoff probability of 100%...Pawtucket, Wilmington, Toronto and LAD.
2. The Hayden's had their hitting streaks halted last week as both Hayden Wilson (23 games - Den) was stopped by Baltimore, and Hayden 'Deuce' Cooper (20 games - Mai) was shut down by New Orleans. Wilson was a third round pick by Miami in 2038 before becoming a FA in 2047 and signing a contract with the Rum Runners. He was traded to Denver this July where in 27 games he's gotten a hit in 24 of them. He's now hitting .303 on the year with 49 stolen bases while playing left and center field. Cooper meanwhile was a second round pick by Maine in 2040 and has turned into one of the better second basemen in the league. He has a +7.8 ZR in the field this season to go along with a .312/.349/.435 slash line and 44 stolen bases. It's a good time to be a Hayden.
3. In old man news 42 year old Jimmy Jeffs signed a one year extension with SDR this past week for a cool $4.8 million. The 9x All-Star and 2x Designated Driver is in his 21st season and is 8th all-time in at bats and 16th all-time in games played. Originally drafted 7th overall by Seattle in 2026 he's played for the Pilots, New Orleans, Indy, Wilmington, Montreal, Batavia, California, and now Santo Domingo. During his time in the BLB those teams have won eight titles, and Jeffs sadly has never been a part of any of them.
4. Stuart Beale stole seven bases last week, giving him 39 on the season. He also has 25 home runs to go along with it. He's by far the best overall first basemen in the league when it comes to hitting and fielding. His 5.4 WAR and 39 swipes lead all first basemen in the league, and his 3.1 ZR is 9th overall. He's on pace to hit 31 HR and join the exclusive 30/30 club once again. Others knocking on the club door are Erick Timmons (Bat), Jakob Lopez (Wil), and Mark Borunda (Pit).
5. What's on tap? After last weeks divisional battles we're back to the final interleague match-up of the season. The highlights from this week are Philly at Pawtucket, Montreal at California, and Toronto at Phoenix. Streak wise the Whalers are on a 10 game losing streak, Phoenix is on a six game winning streak, Brooks Collins (Wil) has a hit in 27 straight games (he's no Hayden), and Denver's closer Christian Carroll hasn't blown a save in 36 chances.
