  • The 2048 Daily Keg - Week 6

    05/18/2048

Interleague has come and gone and the winners this past week were Baltimore, Washington, and Montreal who all went 5-1. The Bulldogs now lead the Stout by a game, the Bats are back to .500, and Montreal now leads the Lager by 2.5 games. On the other side of life Pittsburgh and Hartford went 1-5. Those two teams are bringing up the bottom of the Ale and it looks like the Millers playoff streak of 13 straight years is in serious jeopardy. With everyone playing six here are some team leaders: California scored 36 runs (Pitt 11), Dallas swiped 15 bases (Paw/Cal 0), Toronto hit 13 HRs (Paw 1), Washington allowed 10 runs (Har 35), and Montreal struck out 72 opposing batters (Dal 34).

    Performance of the Week

RF Melchior Werth - The 27 year old was the 6th overall pick of the 2037 draft and turned into a 3x All-Star and won the Stout Slugger in 2046. This past week on May 13th against Wilmington he crushed the Clowns with three home runs and 5 RBI in an 8-3 victory. On the season he's hitting .317/.369/.585 with 10 HRs and 27 RBI.

    Prospect of the Week

1B Vincent Jeffries - Coming in ranked 100 on the list is Jeffries who was a 9th round pick by Toronto back in 2043. He was shipped to Dallas in the Derek Bell trade and looks to have some real potential. This season in AAA he's hitting .306/.460/.622 with 8 HRs and 20 RBI in 29 games. He looks to fill more of the DH role but scouts think he can be a major league starter. At only 22 we see him in the BLB in possible just a season or two.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. Another week, another milestone. Elmer ‘Bane’ Caceres reached 900 career extra base hits this week. Only 46 players in BLB history have reached such lofty heights. Taken 5th overall in the stacked 2033 draft, Bane has been a middle of the order force since his first at bat. Currently on his sixth team he’s also just 32 home runs short of 500.

    2. Feeder league wise we're down or close to the championship games. In the HS championship we have Bishop Gorman taking on Seton Hall Prep, and in the CCBL championship we have Falmouth against Hyannis. In the NCAA they are in the Super Regionals as Long Beach State takes on Texas A&M and Florida State plays Clemson. Long Beach St won 33 games this season, the most in the league, while Florida State was second with 31 wins.

    3. Seems like we have true parity in the BLB right now as seventeen teams have between 18 and 22 wins. Although it’s early, no one appears to be running away in any division. This could make for exciting times come the trade deadline. Or perhaps be a real bonus to Syracuse as adding a Christian Vines or Dominique Graham could be the piece the puts a team ahead of the pack.

    4. Will those Snappers be selling though? Once again after threatening to 'blow it up' the team has responded and Syracuse is now 20-19 on the season. Vines is an amazing 6-0 with a 2.70 ERA as it appears rumors of his demise were greatly exaggerated. Throw in Graham who leads the league in RBI and Syracuse could be a playoff team. What's holding them back? Defense. They have the worst ZR in the league as a team thanks in part to SS Jaden Feldmann and 2B Brenden Santoro who have combined for a -11.5 ZR just by themselves. Maybe it's time to throw Elden Sakamoto in at SS. His career +17.2 ZR there would sure make Vines a lot happier.

    5. What's on tap? We get some 1-2 match-ups this week as Baltimore travels to Carolina and Toronto travels to Montreal. Montreal is the heavy favorite now for the Lager title, but we aren't counting the Canadians out. They are young but need veteran Derek Bell to step up. So far he's 2-5 with a 4.05 ERA. His last losing season was in 2039, his rookie year. Meanwhile the Tobs appear to be the surprise of the league as they are 21-17. They haven't been to the playoffs since 2038...is this their year? They can't hit very well but their pitching is dominating as they are currently second in runs allowed, hits allowed, opponents AVG, and BABIP. Streak wise the parity continues as we don't have a winning or losing streak longer than four games.
