  • The 2048 Daily Keg - Week 2

    04/20/2048

We're already in 2048 and the DK is just making it's first appearance...goodness our writers better get their act together. First off welcome to the 70th season of Brewers League Baseball. Last year ended with the Pittsburgh Millers winning their second title in six seasons. With the departure of two big time players in Free Agency (Starr/Shelton) from a team that was the sixth seed in the Domestic, it looks like they will be hard pressed to repeat. So on we march to 2048 where the Maine Guides after two weeks are first in the Power Rankings! How about those Guides who last year finished 66-96 and have the third pick in this years draft. They spent big in FA though and it looks to be paying off as they are tied with Pawtucket and Dallas for the best record in the league. This past week the winners though were those mentioned Patriots, New Orleans, and Toronto, who all went 5-1. With everyone playing six games against the other league here were some team leaders: Toronto scored 42 runs, Carolina allowed 14 runs, Batavia hit 11 home runs, Pawtucket struck out 70 batters, and Seattle and Santo Domingo stole 11 bases.

    Performance of the Week

P Cordarius Gomez - The 32 year old tossed a no-hitter on April 13th against Philly, the first of his career. Over the course of nine innings he threw 119 pitches, walked none, hit two batters, and struck out 12 during the 8-0 Millers victory. On the season he's now 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 0.06 WHIP, 24 K's, and 1 walk.

    Prospect of the Week

P Dwan Tamarovsky - The #1 prospect in the land is a 21 year old who hails from Lithuanian and was originally discovered by the Freedom in 2042. Traded to the Los Angeles Dinos in 2044 for Tiernan 'Garbage' Parker, Dwan has blossomed into someone who scouts believe could be "an elite arm" in the near future. His projected ETA for making it to the show is this season, but for now he's in AA where he is 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA in two starts.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. What a week for milestones. Mr. Kodiak, Joey Robertson, hit his 300th home run this week off soon to be 300 game winner Pat Arballo. He becomes just the second Kodiak ever, besides Mike Morla, to reach that milestone. Not to be outdone, Rory Elia cracked #500 off of Miller reliever Zeshaun Lewis as he continues to be a middle of the order force for every team he's suited up for. Lastly, Robert Jesse slammed #500 off of future Hall of Fame member Sheng 'Admiral' Jong. It's been quite a return to Toronto for 'Stretch' as he now trails only the immortal Dylan Owens on Toronto's all-time home run list.

    2. Three teams are tied for the leagues best record at 9-4. However, only one of those teams had a massive fire sale and let everyone know that they were in full rebuild mode. The Dallas Drillers, fresh off of selling Reid Cole and Derek Bell for a bevy of picks, started the year an incredible 8-0. It was a rough last five games though and rumors are there are more trades to come. Even so it was still certainly an exciting first week of the season for Drillers fans.

    3. Is it the end for the Syracuse juggernaut of the last half decade? After a huge trade that put them all in last season, they now appear to be on their last leg as everyone not named Cristian Vines is in the last year of their contract. Barring a huge turnaround to their 4-9 record, we may just see a fire sale for a team that came close on a number of occasions to taking home the Brew title. Although he slipped a little, Vines would still be quite an attractive piece for a team looking to make a run in this year's playoff race if Syracuse can't turn it around.

    4. Washington, boasting perhaps the leagues best GM, has made very few regrettable trades over the years. Zane Burns leading the Kodiaks to the title in 2043 may be one of their very few missteps. Rumblings in Toronto seem to think that young Joseph Dolata may be an even bigger prize. Traded for a young pitching prospect and a 3rd for 2nd pick swap, the deal went under the radar in most circles. What has Dolata done with his two weeks in Toronto? How about hitting .321 with 5 home runs and a league leading 16 RBI. Yikes!

    5. The HOF class has just been announced and talk has as many as six members of the class getting selected this year. It would seem that Johhny 'Big Stick' Swope, Javy 'Blur' Guidino, and Barton Mejia are all locks to be unanimous selections. Ron Hutchison, Quincey Swaney, Robby Brooksher, Seth Blankenship, and Tom Jensen also all had outstanding careers and will each garner their fair share of votes. We want to take a second though to talk about the BLB's greatest ever infield defender, Dave Davis. He is a holdover from last year's voting, and with ten DWI's, over 2,200 hits, and over 550 SB's it's about time that the voters right this wrong and vote in Mr. Gold Glove.
