California again sits at the top of the Power Rankings with a 6-0 week that included sweeps of Santo Domingo and New Orleans. Other bog weeks were had by Batavia, Denver, Indianapolis, and Montreal, who all went 5-1. The other end of the spectrum saw a whopping teams go 1-5! Maine, Carolina, New Orleans, Santo Domingo, Toronto, and New York all struggled to get into the win column.

Performance of the Week
P Seth Nelson – In a week that featured a few great performances, the Indianapolis hurler stood above the rest. An absolutely dominating stretch saw Nelson throw 7.2 no hit innings against an overmatched Carolina Tobs. With one out in the eighth, Tavis Walshe singled on a short fly just over the left side of the infield. Another hit in the ninth and Nelson’s day was done. His final line was 8.2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB and 10 K on only 96 pitches.
Injury of the Week
SP Jaylen Ridley – In a season of injuries to the Pawtucket Patriots, and just as Aubrey Albano is due to return, the Patriots are dealt another huge injury blow. While throwing a gem against Windy City, Ridley felt something pop during his last pitch of the sixth inning on a routine groundout off the bat of Shawn Petruska. Fans were unsure of why the Patriot hurler didn’t return to pitch in the seventh, but team doctors confirmed after the game, that surgery will be needed to remove bone chips in his right elbow. This is Ridley’s fourth injury of the season, and will likely hold him out until 2048.
Prospect of the Week
SP Ulisses Taylor – On a scouting trip to the British Virgin Islands 4 years ago the Baltimore scouts discovered Taylor and decided to give him a chance. He’s taken his chance and run with it. This week he showed the promise that Bulldogs brass has been waiting for. In RL action, he completely bewildered the Belle River bats holding them to one hit, one walk, and 9 strikeouts over 8 fantastic innings. Scouts are still unsure what to make of Taylor, but like his stuff and are convinced he may eventually end up in the middle of the Bulldogs rotation in a few seasons.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. The IL Wild Card appears to officially be down to Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Montreal, and Wilmington fighting for three spots. Toronto and Indianapolis are now 7 and 7.5 games out. With the trade deadline happening this week, and a few game changing players still on the block, perhaps one of these teams makes a move to push them over the hump and into the wild card.
2. Two of the BLB’s biggest stars are returning from long stints on the IL this week. Pawtucket gets back Aubrey Albano. The Patriots have managed to hold on to the division lead so far and get a huge boost with the return of the reigning batting champ and top of the order force. Montreal is also set to get back 1B Jaxson Neal. Neal is the reigning Stout Slugger and his power bat will be a welcome addition to Montreal’s chances in securing the last Wild Card.
3. The trade deadline is upon us this week. Montreal and Pittsburgh are two teams that are looking to shore up their lagging middle infield play. Might other teams also be looking to shore up weaknesses? Perhaps there is still a big deal to be made that may turn the tide in the playoff races.
4. It’s hard to believe, but SP Sheng Jong is in the running for the pitching triple crown. At 39 years young and in his second stint in Batavia, the Admiral is doing everything in his power to pitch the Red Jackets into the playoffs. With the exception of one miserable season in California, Jong has been a solid top of the order pitcher in the BLB since getting traded to SDR in 2033. There are rumours that this may be his last season. Finishing his career with a pitching triple crown would certainly be the icing on top of his soon to be Hall of Fame career!
5. Hard to believe it is fifth on this list, but now it’s finally time to talk about an incredible streak that is happening in the IL. Washington reliever Joey Stennett. A fourth-round pick has finally put it all together this year and is an incredible 8-0 (actually 9 in a row dating back to last) and is a key piece in Washington’s hope to become the first back-to-back BLB champ in over 20 seasons!
