Performance of the Week
P Johnathon 'El' Dorado - On May 13th against Dallas he turned in the 6th best performance of the season when he went 8.1 innings, allowed three hits, no runs, and struck out eight during an 8-0 Dinos victory. The 23 year old was the 7th overall pick of the 2044 draft and is already in his second season in the majors. So far in seven starts he's 3-2 with a 2.40 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 169 ERA+.
Prospect of the Week
RF Bailey Pierce - The 21 year old has moved into the Top 100...as #100...after crushing the ball in A ball this season. In 29 games he's hitting .274 with 11 HR's and a 1.002 OPS. Drafted in the second round by Toronto in 2043 he played three years in the Rookie League before going to AA last year and struggling at the plate. Coaches love his work ethic and intelligence, and a year in A ball might do wonders for him.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Four time Last Call winner Satchel 'Crayon' Ramirez signed a 4 year/$42m contract extension with the Kodiaks this past week. The 3x All-Star and power pitcher out of the pen for California is ranked the 2nd best closer in the league by the OSA. He was originally drafted by Miami, but traded to California in 2041. During California's 2043 championship run he pitched in 37 postseason innings, had an ERA of 1.46, and struck out 55 batters while only walking eight. Another big signings this week was LAD extending catcher Bear Monay to a 4 year/$43m deal. He was a scouting discovery by the Dinos back in 2035 and first appeared in the BLB in 2041. He was named to the 2045 All-Star team and he's one of the better defensive catchers in the league.
2. Pat 'Melody' Nunes is still chugging along at the age of 38 as the 5x All-Star recently reached the 2500 hit mark on May 14th. Nunes was the 2nd overall pick by Phoenix in 2026 and was traded to Washington in 2037. He helped lead the Bats to a championship in 2039 but became a free agent and signed with Dallas in 2042. Since then he's played musical teams and suited up for LAD, Seattle, Hartford, Philly, and now Indianapolis.
3. Syracuse is struggling at 15-24, but instead of going for the repeat turnaround of last season, the Snappers have been reaching out to teams to unload some star players. So far Christian Vines isn't on the market but if the slide continues he might end up there. What would be the value of the soon to be 29 year old who's won four straight Pale Ale's, but had a noticeable decline in control this season? How noticeable, well Vines is currently 5-1 with a 1.79 ERA in nine starts. His 1.23 WHIP is the highest of his career though, and his K/BB of 3.5 is his lowest since his first full season. It makes you realize just how ridiculously good he was at his peak that he's still dominant even with average to below average control. He's ranked as the 6th best pitcher in the league, leads the league (again) in K's, and also is only signed for two more seasons at the cheap rate of $18.1m a year. We think there would be quite a market for him.
4. Racers centerfielder LaTrivis Chojnacki leads the BLB in almost every offensive category among rookies. He is hitting .312/.376/.539 with 5 HR's, 20 RBI's, and 5 stolen bases. In both leagues that is first in average, HR's, RBI's, OBP, SLG, OPS, WAR, hits, runs, 2B, 3B, total bases...well you get the point. Discovered out of Poland in 2040 by Indy scouts he's also one of the best defensive outfielders in the game.
5. What's on tap? In the Import this week we're excited to see New York at Washington. The Knights lead the Bats by a single game in the Stout, and this will be their second series of the year. Washington took the first one 2-1 with both wins coming by a single run. In the Domestic we get New Orleans at Dallas. The Voodoo have fully rebounded from their championship hangover last season and at 28-11 sport the second best record in the league. Dallas is 22-17, second in the Lager, and already six games behind them. At only a quarter way through the season this isn't a must win, but the Drillers don't want to get swept and fall too far behind in only May. Streak wise Pawtucket's Charlie Guevin hasn't blown a save in 41 chances, Wilmington's Seth 'Icebox' Cobb has won seven straight games, and Drillers first basemen Stuart Beale has homered in three straight games.
