Performance of the Week
P Cade Hogan - On July 6th against Philly he turned in the 19th best pitching performance of the season in a 3-0 Roadrunners victory. Over the course of eight innings he allowed no runs, three hits and struck out eight while only allowing one Freedom player to get past first base. On the season Hogan is 7-3 with a 2.81 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.
Prospect of the Week
CF Pat 'Bones' Trumbo - The 15th overall pick of the 2041 draft is currently playing AA ball for the Bulldogs minor league squad. On the season he's hitting .256/316/.430 with 10 HR's and 30 RBI's. He's also really good at getting beaned as he's been hit eight times in only 68 games. Scouts think he has a chance to be a contact hitter that rarely strikes out, and coaches love his intelligence and work ethic. At only 21 years old we could see him in the BLB in the next season or two at the latest.

The Bulls reached third base in the third, with one out, but a double play ended the inning. There wasn't another base runner on either side until the top of the fifth when Bulls shortstop Sherman West singled to open up the inning. After West stole second and then third, he was driven home by rookie Torian Dixon, his second career RBI. In the sixth Batavia had runners at the corners with no outs, but on a botched hit and run Shannon McCaskil struck out swinging and Oscar D'Addona was caught stealing second. Tom Stark then flew out and the rally was over.
Finally though in the bottom of the ninth the home crowd had something to cheer about. Opening up the inning Oscar D'Addona hit his 7th home run of the season on the very first pitch. After McCaskil singled, Denver pulled Sean Brown and in came Evan 'Ghost' Ruehling. James Munsie then doubled and Erick Timmons was intentionally walked. Bases loaded, no outs, the home team down by one. Cael Miller then hit a deep drive which was caught by centerfielder Wesley Pederson, who has one of the strongest arms on the team. McCaskil, who is one of the slowest players in the league, was sent home...and was gunned down. Ismael Busbee was then intentionally walked and it all came down to Pat Holes. He fouled off the first pitch, then took four straight balls as the tying run got to walk home. A Brice Woods ground out then ended the inning. All though the home crowd was happy for the rally you could sense the disappointment the Red Jackets didn't end it.
In extras Denver had a man on first after being hit by a pitch, but after a strikeout the Bulls hit into a double play to end the inning. Now it was time for Batavia to end it. Najera hit an opening double, but then D'Addona popped up a bunt which was caught by the pitcher. McCaskill struck out to giver them two outs and the crowd groaned, but then Ruehling threw a wild pitch allowing Najera to get to third. This time the Bulls manager chose not to walk Timmons and he made them pay. On the second pitch of the at bat he smashed a single down the right field line to bring Najera home, and end the game.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. JD Rice is off and running again. After an April that saw him hit .181 with 4 HR's, he's now hitting .333 with 4 HR's during July. On the season his average is up to .255 and his 25 HR's lead the Import. Rice is once again on pace to hit almost 50 bombs and put up a 3.2 WAR. That is good news for a Bulldogs team that is currently three games out of the wildcard.
2. Speaking of running, Richie 'Powder' van Luik currently leads the league with 40 stolen bases and is projected to reach 78 for the year. He just needs 42 more to move into second place and 70 to pass Jerry Daly for the all-time stolen base record. He won't turn 30 until August 1st.
3. Our favorite lovable losers, the Barre Greys, have now lost 61 straight games in A ball this season. Checking in at 1-67 they are now 43 games back in their division, but only 36 games out of the wildcard. They are getting closer though as this past week they took a 2-1 lead into the 9th against Erie before giving up two runs, including the losing run on a passed ball.
4. The DK can finally get excited about the 40/40 club. In the long and illustrious history of the BLB only one player ever broke the barrier, Ryan Hubbard. Back in 2042 he hit 40 HR's and swiped 41 bases while playing for the Clowns. This season the Voodoo's Colby 'Mirror' Hullinger currently has 29 HR's and 24 SB's though...and is on pace for 55 HR's and 45 SB's. The 40/40 trophy should look good next to the Stout Slugger award he's highly favored to win.
5. We are back to interleague this week as the DL and IL prepare to do battle. Some of the match-ups we are looking forward to: Phoenix at Pawtucket, Santo Domingo at Carolina, Los Angeles at Pittsburgh, and Washington at Santo Domingo.
