Five Things We Think We Think
1. Interleague must mean extra innings as we had several long affairs this week. Washington and Pawtucket went 12 and then 14 on back to back nights, Wilmington and Baltimore went 17, Denver and Maine went 16, Denver and Syracuse went 13, and New Orleans/Windy City and Maine/California both went 11. Looks like we might have a few tired bullpens who could use a break.
2. We have our first champion of the season as the Woodstock Woodpeckers defeated the Cullman Cavaliers two games to zero to capture their first High School championship. Led by freshman pitchers Zach Ganzer and Keegan Davies, and sophomore outfielder Sean McLean they went 30-10 on the season and led the league in starters ERA, runs against, and pitching WAR. In the NCAA we are down to the final four as Oregon and Clemson currently have one game leads on Oklahoma and UCLA. Last but not least Cotuit has a 1-0 lead over Chatham in the CCBL Cape Cup.
3. Dominique Graham went back to back as the Domestic POTW after hitting .500 with 2 HR's and 4 RBI's in six games this past week. He's now hitting .313 with 11 HR's and 28 RBI's on the season and has a solid chance of capturing his second Stout Slugger in three seasons. It might be tough though with Voodoo shortstop Colby 'Mirror' Hullinger healthy and hitting .284 with 16 HR's and 36 RBI's while posting a league leading 2.3 WAR.
4. Seattle star Richie 'Powder' van Luik is projected to reach 651 stolen bases this season, 26 short of the all-time record held by Jerry Daly. 'Powder' is currently only 29 years old and won't turn 30 until August. Daly was 32 when he was suspended for life from the league after 2002 due to performance enhancing drugs, and is one of only three players to have more than 600 career steals. The other two...Geoff 'Mr. Reliable' Dail and Jaime 'Toro' Rush. You get a nickname when you are fast apparently.
5. Wilmington continues to be the pride of the fielding community as their +20.66 ZR is almost double the second place Kodiaks +10.70. On the other side Maine is -22.75 while Denver is -11.10. The Clowns and the Kodiaks are a combined 49-27 while the Bulls and Guides are a combined 29-51.
