5-15-45 and five was the magic number this past week as five teams all went 5-2. California, Syracuse, Seattle, Pawtucket, and Montreal all went +3 in the standings with none needing it more than the Snappers who sit at 13-20 right now. On the other side of life Maine went 0-7 while Hartford went 1-5. Performance of the Week
P Christian Vines - Much to the chagrin of batters around the league Vines is back and better than ever. Against Indy on May 15th he only went seven innings but allowed no runs, two hits, and struck out an amazing 16 batters. In six starts on the year he's 2-0 with a 0.27 ERA and 67 K's, 15 more than the next pitcher in the Domestic.
Prospect of the Week
P JaQuan Wamugunda - The 20 year old out of Togo signed with Toronto but was traded to Philly in 2042. He's currently ranked the 55th overall prospect and is 2-0 with a 0.83 ERA and 18 K's in four starts. He throws five pitches, can hit 99 on the radar gun, and coaches love his work ethic. We love his future...and his name.
Game of the Week
|
Things didn't start out well though when Reid Cole knocked in Seth Donna in the first and Windy City took an early lead. Washington answered though with a two run home run by Elias Steves in the first and then Dudley Magan scored off a fielders choice in the second. Dusty Kocurek hit a solo home run in the fourth to bring Windy City within one, then in the 8th Shaun Petruska hit a two run shot to give them the lead. Once again though the Bats answered in the bottom of the 8th with a Magana sac fly, and RBI singles by Andy 'Dogface' Dunkin and Amos Apelian.
With a 6-4 lead they left in Dave Brancal, who had given up the home run to Petruska, and he promptly gave up another two run home run to Seth Donna. The Bats were unable to get on base in the bottom of the 9th and the game went into extras. Brancal was pulled for Ralph Shields who went fly out, walk, strike out, strike out and it was the Bats game to win. Steves flew out, but up came Lafayette Collazo who was signed to a minor league contract this off-season but has appeared in 16 games so far this year. The battle was on. Ball, foul ball, strike, ball, foul ball, ball, foul ball...356 foot solo home run. Collazo was mugged by his teammates at home, the fireworks went off over the stadium, and the party was on.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Congrats to Sheng 'Admiral' Jong who recorded his 200th career win on May 11th against the Millers. The 37 year old is 5-2 with a 3.12 ERA this season and doesn't appear to be slowing down. He is 33rd on the all-time victory list and could move into the low 20's by the time the season is over. The 7x All-Star, 2x Pale Ale, and 2x BLB champion should have no problem getting into the Hall of Fame after his career is over. Also hats off to Oscar D'Addona for his 2000th career hit. Known as one of the best defensive shortstops to play the game he is in his 19th season and still has the glove. A lifetime .249 hitter he's won three DWI's, been to one All-Star game, and was part of the Bats 2039 championship team.
2. The BLB was marred by another ugly brawl last week as Seattle and Batavia got into it. Seattle pitcher Brice Daniels gave up a solo home run in the 7th to Wolde-Selassie Gahiji and up stepped Cayden Huff. The Pilots were already miffed about a Marco Taylor solo shot in the top of the inning, and Daniels threw inside twice before finally finding Huff's back with a fastball. Huff did not appreciate the gesture and charged the mound. The 6'5 Huff and the 6'2 Daniels went at it with several punches landed by both parties before being separated by teammates. After the game Daniels showed no remorse for his actions and was suspended an amazing nine games by the office of the commissioner, while Huff was only given four.
3. Dominique Graham won his 6th career player of the week award after hitting .357 with 4 HR's and 13 RBI's against Hartford and Indy. That should go well with his 2043 Stout Slugger, four All-Star appearances, two Designated Drivers and his 2040 Refreshing New Brew. The 6'3, 220 lb, 28 year old now has 200 career home runs and since he's averaging over 40 a season he could end up with another 300 more.
4. The NCAA is down to the regionals as only eight teams remain in the playoffs. Currently Oregon, LSU, Baylor and Clemson have 1-0 leads against Texas, Oklahoma, UCLA, and Cal State. In the CCBL we're down to four as Chatham and Cotuit have 1-0 leads over Wareham and Harwich. Meanwhile at the HS level the championship is set as the Woodstock HS Woodpeckers take on the Cullman HS Cavaliers. Woodstock won 30 games this season, and in their season series beat Cullman all four games by the combined score of 64-20. Yikes.
5. Interleague is back for the BLB this week as the Import and Domestic do battle for the second time season. Last time the Domestic barely took the prize after going 37-35 against the Import. Some fun match-ups for the week: Hartford at Washington, Pittsburgh at Baltimore, and Washington at Pawtucket.
