  • The 2044 Daily Keg - Week 22

    09/05/2044

Well it was a good run for the Rum Runners as the snazzy Snappers move back into first with a 4-2 week. The Hartford Whalers though were the king of the week, and the Import, as they went 6-0 with sweeps of Baltimore and New York. They outscored their opponents by 24 runs over the two series and find themselves now only five games out of the DL wildcard. The other nice week was California, who rebounded from a poor July, to go 5-1. They swept Toronto and took two from New Orleans as the Kodiaks are now the top IL wildcard team. The not so nice weeks were LA, New York, and Baltimore who all went 1-5.

    Performance of the Week

P Rayburn Michel - The 24 year old hails from Martinique and was signed by the Rum Runners, but traded to Syracuse in 2037 in the monster trade that featured Dave Taylor and Seth Blankenship. He lasted there until 2041 when he was traded to Pawtucket for Carlo Carrero and a second round pick. He debuted that season for the Patriots in the BLB and went 11-8 with a 2.89 ERA last season as a full time starter. This year on August 30th against Carolina he continued to show his star ability as he pitched a two-hit shutout with seven K's and only two walks in a 1-0 victory. He's now 11-5 with a 2.96 ERA and has become one of the most beloved players in the league.

    Prospect of the Week

P Calvin Navratil - The 7th pick of the 2042 draft by Carolina recently passed up Theodore Blume, the 7th pick of the 2043 draft, to take over the top of the pitching prospects list. The 19 year old throws a fastball, slider, and curve, can hit 99 on the radar, and has the stamina to throw complete games. In the Rookie League this season he's 4-8 with a 5.26 ERA and 74 K's in 18 starts.

It was a wild one in Pittsburgh as these two teams fighting for their wildcard lives battled for almost four and a half hours on September 2nd. The Millers took a 2-1 game lead into the 8th and gave setup man Zack Coffey the ball. After getting Albert Mether to pop out though he beaned Justin Babbage, gave up a single to Melchoir Werth, a sacrifice fly to Timmy Brown, then finally a double to Andy Schultz to blow the save. Nobody was able to score again until the top of the 12th when Albert Mether fouled off seven straight pitches with a full count before finally getting walked by Dustin Morse. Herman Simmons then came in to pitch and allowed three straight singles as New York scored twice to seemingly put the game out of reach. Not so fast my friend as Billy 'Bucky' Edwards came in for the Knights and promptly gave up a first pitch home run to Kody Sloan. He then walked Maxwell George before Mat Washburn hit a walk-off two run shot, his 29th of the season, to end it. Considering Irvin Watts hit a three run walk-off the night before against the Knights it was a fun two days for the home crowd.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. After Syracuse decided to take two of three from Washington and wreck our prediction (we aren't really good at those), they have built a 14.5 game lead in the Ale. That's more than double the rest of the division leads combined together. SDR leads Montreal by a half game, Washington leads Baltimore by 2.5 games, and Windy City leads California by 4 games.

    2. Hats off to Philly's Rory Elia who smacked his 400th career home run, and Snappers Tommy Davis who recorded his 900th extra base hit this week. Elia is only 30 years old but already a 9x All-Star, 2x Stout Slugger, and 3x DWI winner. He's averaged 44 home runs a year since coming into the league at 20 years old and is 43rd all-time in home runs. Meanwhile Davis is almost 39 years old, was the 9th overall pick by the then Syracuse Slammers back in 2023, and was always known for being a doubles and home run threat. His 900 XBH's rank him 37th all-time.

    3. The July winners were Baltimore and Phoenix who each went 20-9. The Roadrunners are now almost locks for a playoff spot at 95% while the Bulldogs playoff odds are around 77%. The loser of the month was California who at 9-19 went from neck and neck with Windy City for the Bock crown to now four games back. They have a 98.5% chance of making the postseason though as they are currently in the first wildcard spot. Considering they won the 2043 Brewmasters Cup from the wildcard spot maybe this is just all in their plan.

    4. With expanded rosters and just over 20 games left it's now or never for the 2044 pennant race. In the Domestic it's a three-way race for two spots between New Orleans, Pittsburgh, and Maine. Pittsburgh has three game series against both teams while Maine and New Orleans are done for the year, with the Voodoo holding the 6-5 advantage. In the Import it appears that New York and Seattle have dropped to 15% and 14% respectively in the playoff odds after last week. With Baltimore the lowest among the four wildcards at 77% it looks like their spot to lose. The Bulldogs do play the Knights three more times and the Pilots four more times though, so anything can happen.

    5. Congrats to the 2044 Brewers League Baseball Hall of Fame Class.
