Performance of the Week
RF Melchior Werth - We had one player break into the top performances of the season this week as Werth lit up the Kodiaks on June 25th. In four at bats he had three hits, drove in six, and scored twice in a 12-2 victory. On the season the former sixth pick of the 2037 draft is hitting .264/.334/.446 with 13 HR's and 41 RBI's.
Prospect of the Week
SS Dane Jennings - The 21 year old was picked 15th overall in 2040 by Dallas but was traded to Toronto in May of last year. He is now ranked the 25th overall prospect in the league, and was brought up to AA several weeks ago after hitting .317 in 35 A ball games. He didn't miss a step as he's now hitting .393 with 13 doubles, 17 RBI's and 3 stolen bases in 28 games. He's a top flight defensive shortstop as well, and scouts think he could be a potential BLB All-Star down the road.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Syracuse has now built the first double digit lead in the standings as they have outpaced second place Pittsburgh by 11.5 games. They have a run differential now of +115, an average win probability of almost 110, and are first in runs allowed, home runs allowed, and second in strikeouts. Christian Vines is 10-1 with a 1.58 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, and is on pace for a 12.4 WAR. The year of the Snappers continues.
2. We had our second straight week with a brawl as this time Montreal and Wilmington squared off on June 24th. In the 8th inning with the Clowns holding a 2-0 lead, Wilmington pitcher Bryce Walker gave up a solo home run to Preston Capps to cut the lead in the half. He then beaned DJ Osburn who decided to charge the mound, igniting a bench clearing brawl. The 6'6 Osburn and the 6'5 Walker put on a good show but the teams were quickly separated and the game continued. Montreal then proceeded to go single, double, single, double, two run home run as they scored six more runs and built a 7-2 lead, which turned out to be the final score. Both Osburn and Walker were later suspended three games each by the league office.
3. Batavia might not be doing well in the standings, and have lost nine straight, but they sure can run. The Red Jackets have stolen 125 bases this season, 29 more than second place Seattle. They also have been thrown out 29 times, tied with Seattle for most in the league. They have two players with more than 30 SB's each, Dempsey 'Sandman' Najera with 36 and Jadon Kubiak with 33. The record for most stolen bases by a team in a season is 303, set by Los Lunas in the inaugural season of the BLB, but Batavia has a chance to finish in the top five.
4. All-Star voting is ramping up as Dominique Graham currently leads the DL in votes, while Kyle Olmsted leads the IL. Some potential first time All-Stars who currently lead their position in votes: CF Brian Wallace (LAD), and CF Hayden Wilson (DAL). Come on voters...we need some new blood out there!
5. At the age of 36 have we seen the end of JJ Plumley? He won the Pale Ale in 2042 after going 17-5 with a 2.80 ERA. Last season though he was 9-12 with a 3.59 ERA, his first losing season in a decade. Now this year he is 7-7 with a 4.75 ERA in 16 starts. The 9x All-Star and 5x Pale Ale winner is one of the most dominant pitchers in BLB history, but sadly father time catches up with us all. Known for his ability to strikeout anyone he is currently 10th all-time in career K's, and should pass Pancho Herrera and Fernando Hernandez by seasons end. He was the 28th overall pick of the 2025 draft by Wilmington, and will be a first ballot BLB Hall of Fame selection.
