  • The 2044 Daily Keg - Week 8

    05/30/2044

The snazzy Snappers stay on top with another 5-1 week that included a sweep of Montreal. Syracuse now leads the Ale by eight games...and it's not even June. Another big week was had by Toronto who also went 5-1 with a sweep of Indy. Don't look now but if the playoffs started today the Canadians would be in them. They last went in 2039 but fell off the playoff train for a few years during a rebuild. On the flip side Indy went 1-5 while Phoenix went 2-5. With Pittsburgh going 2-4 that means the Road Runners and Millers, who each won over 100 games last season, are on pace to win less than 75 games.

    Performance of the Week

1B Mustafaa Ke - The first round selection from 2039 is coming into his own and could be a dominant hitter for the Racers down the road. This past week on May 26th against Wilmington he had two home runs, drove in five, and scored three times during a 14-6 Indy victory. On the season he's hitting .272/.308/.505 with 10 HR's and 42 RBI's in 52 games.

    Injury of the Week

P Zander Wyatt - The 27 year old left the game on May 28th with back tightness and is expected to be day to day for several weeks. On the year the former second round pick is 0-3 with 12 saves, a 1.85 ERA, and a 1.15 WHIP. Last season he missed five months with a torn back muscle so reports are that the Patriots are going to make sure he's healthy before he returns to the mound.

    Prospect of the Week

P Cayden Sullivan - Syracuse must grow pitchers on trees as Sullivan was a 5th round pick in 2039 and is now the 53rd ranked prospect in the league. In AA so far this year he's 4-2 with a 3.46 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in eight starts. He can hit 101 mph on the radar gun, he has three good pitches, and he has the stamina to start and finish games.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. When we saw that Collin 'Prince' Maloney of Baltimore had a six hit game in nine at bats we figured it was a 17+ extra inning affair. It turned out to be only 15 innings though as the Bulldogs racked up 24 hits to Seattle's 14 and won 13-11. It was 4-4 in the 4th, 6-6 after the top of the 7th, 10-10 at the end of the 9th, and 11-11 after the 11th before two bases loaded walks in the 15th gave Baltimore the win.

    2. You know who didn't need a lot of hits to win, Carolina. On May 26th they beat Windy City 1-0 off of two hits. A triple by Draven Haley opened up the 3rd and Grant Hockensmith drove him home after the Blues threw to first for the sure out. The only other hit was a single by Willie Palmer in the 5th. Palmer reached second on a sac bunt and third on an error, but that was as far as he got. The Blues meanwhile scattered six hits, left nine men on base and never once crossed home plate.

    3. Christian Vines picked up two more wins this week against Pittsburgh and Montreal and struck out 23 batters in only 13 innings pitched. He now has 129 on the season and is projected to reach the unheard of number of 410, 91 more than the record of 319 that was set in 1978. On the season Vines is 7-1 with a 1.21 ERA, 0.65 WHIP, and 319 ERA+. Throw in closer Tony Ramos who has six saves and hasn't allowed a run in his last eight appearances and no wonder the Snappers are en fuego.

    4. Montreal reliever Gabe Slaven popped up on the streak list as he leads all pitchers with 13 consecutive wins. A closer look shows he is 1-0 with a 6.62 ERA this season in 10 games. Looking back though he was 4-0 last season, 3-0 in 2042, and 5-1 in 2041. So he lost a game at the beginning of 2041...and hasn't lost since. Overall in six seasons with the Exports he is 18-2 with a 3.70 ERA. Some guys are just winners.

    5. Can this be the year one of the 'drought' teams below breaks the curse? Philly leads the Stout by two, Syracuse leads the Ale by eight, and Denver is currently tied for the final wildcard spot in the IL with Baltimore. All you have to do is get in, and if three of the twelve teams are the Bulls, Freedom, and Snappers anything can happen.
