  • The 2043 Daily Keg - Week 2

    04/20/2043

Those sneaky Blues take over the top spot in the PR as they go 5-1, with their only equal the Seattle Pilots who rebounded from a tough opening week to go 5-1 as well. The Blues swept Montreal and took two of three from Toronto, while the Pilots swept Indy and took two of three against SDR. On the other side of life California, Maine, Batavia and Montreal all went 1-5. Some team leaders with everyone playing six: Syracuse and Pawtucket hit 13 HR's, Carolina and Maine swiped eight bases, Pittsburgh allowed 14 runs, Phoenix scored 37 runs, and Seattle hit five triples.

    Performance of the Week

3B Phillip Klopf - The 31 year old was signed by the Snappers 1/1/40, was an All-Star that season, then saw his WAR drop from 5.0 to 2.7 to 0.9 last season. On April 13th though he launched three home runs against Batavia and drove in five during a 9-3 victory. His WAR this season in only 13 games is 0.9, or what he did last year in 155.

    Injury of the Week

P Zack Coffey - The 36 year old was placed on the IL after being diagnosed with shoulder inflammation on April 17th and will be out at least three months. Since coming over from New York via trade in 2039 he's gone 18-18 with 137 saves and a 3.08 ERA, while also recording another 14 saves with a 2.56 ERA in the post-season. Rumors are that Pittsburgh won't pick up his team option next season and he'd either love to return to New York or his home state of California.

    Prospect of the Week

P Cayden Sullivan - The 31st ranked prospect in the league was a 97th overall player drafted in 2039 as Syracuse took him with the first pick of the 5th round! So far this season in A ball he's 2-0 with a .53 ERA and 16 K's to no walks. He throws a fastball, sinker, and curve and can hit 101 on the radar gun.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. Two former first rounders battled it out in the diamond this week as the BLB was marred by the first fight of the season. Carolina's Roy Flowers beaned Maine's James 'Wacky' Vandehey on April 17th in the top of the 9th after Flowers gave up a three run home run to Derrick Sahiri to give the Guides a 7-6 lead. The 6'5 Vandehey took down Flowers and had him in a headlock before teammates intervened. They were both ejected, Carolina tied the game up in the bottom of the 9th, and ended up winning in the bottom of the 12th. The office of the commissioner suspended both players for four games.

    2. Syracuse is off and running this season as they have 15 stolen bases while only being caught once. Harold Delgado already has seven after only stealing 38 last season. Philly also has 15 (caught 5 times) with Johnny Whitaker racking up nine swipes. He's on pace for 112 which would break the record of 92 set by Richie 'Powder' van Luik back in 2039.

    3. The Brutal Bock features the two best records in the league with 11-2 Windy City and 10-3 Phoenix. Throw in Seattle and California who are 7-6 and it might be a long year for LAD and Denver. Windy City had a uniform update this off-season but are still the same ol' Blues. Barton Mejia is 3-0 and Sean Sayers is going to make his 4th straight All-Star game at the ripe age of 25. Phoenix is battling injuries but should get Yuri Baldwin back in a month and still has last seasons Pale Ale winner Derek Bell leading a top three rotation in the league. California has been to the playoffs eight straight seasons while Seattle hasn't missed the postseason since 2022.

    4. One thing Windy City isn't good at is fielding at short stop. Julian 'Hook' Anderson "leads" the league with a -2.7 ZR and it doesn't look to improve much as he posted a -15.8 ZR last season. He's a true third basemen, and can play second pretty well, but he struggles at short. With Dawson Davis only able to play third, and Jimmy Doss only able to play second, he appears to be stuck for the time being. When he's sad at least he can go in his locker and look at his 2040 and 2041 BLB championship rings with Batavia and Windy City.

    5. Speaking of Batavia they are now 2-11 and fallen on hard times since that 2040 title. They still have the #1 hitting prospect in the league though. Julian Irwin is currently in A ball and at 20 years old scouts think he can be a star. Like our POTW Sullivan who was drafted in the 5th, Irwin of all things was drafted in the 8th round of the 2040 draft, 181st overall.
