  • The 2042 Daily Keg - Week 15

    07/21/2042

In the short All-Star week we see those scrappy overachieving Washington Bats shoot to the top of the Power Rankings as they overtake California by .10 of a point. The Bats, along with Wilmington and Dallas where the only teams to get sweeps this week as they took care of Carolina, Pawtucket, and New Orleans respectively. Some team leaders for the week: Seattle hit 8 home runs, those pesky Pilots and Baltimore scored 25 runs, Syracuse swiped 9 bases, Wilmington, Washington, and LAD only allowed 5 runs each, and California struck out 38 opposing batters.

    Performance of the Week

P Gary Fioroli - The 26 year old dazzled the Bulls on July 16th with an 8 inning, 3 hit, and 10 K performance during a 14-0 Kodiaks victory. At 26 years old this is his third season in the BLB and he has turned into quite the find for California. Originally signed out of Italy by Seattle scouts he was released by the organization at the start of the 2039. Several months later he was given a minor league contract by California and he broke into the BLB the following year. After going 17-6 with a 3.97 ERA last season he's now 13-3 with a 3.23 ERA this year. 30-9 off the scrap heap is what you call a win.

    Injury of the Week

P Christian Vines - After going down with a partially torn labrum in May he came back strong and was 4-0 in his first five starts. Then on July 16th he left the game against Maine with back pain, was diagnosed with back spasms, and will be out again, this time for over a month. The 24 year old is 9-2 with a 2.92 ERA this season and we wouldn't be surprised if the Snappers just shut down their young ace for the season after this latest injury.

    Prospect of the Week

P Cole Socia - The former 2040 second round pick is one of two Top 100 pitching prospects for the Dinos who have thrown over 100 innings on the year in the minors. At 22 he has the arm now but it might be time to give him a rest since he looks like a future starter. In 2040 he was a CCBL All-Star and finished 3rd in the Outstanding Pitcher Award voting. He has a devastating slider and change-up and the stamina to throw complete games.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. Dawson 'Wedge' Davis has been something this season as he went into the All-Star break hitting .311 with 36 HR's and 86 RBI's. He's on pace to hit 62 HR's and drive in 148 runs, monster numbers. To put that in perspective though against Turell Morris' historic 2030 season and he'd still be 7 HR's and 20 RBI's behind 'Two Ton'.

    2. One person who does have a shot at breaking a record though is Snappers outfielder Erwijn 'Moriarity' de Jong. The 30 year old has stolen 57 bases this season and is on pace for 98. Richie 'Powder' van Luik set the record of 92 back in 2039 when he hit an unthinkable .402.

    3. We talked about Dallas against New Orleans last week and now after sweeping the Bootleggers, er Gamblers, er Dukes...er Voodoo...the Drillers have won five in a row and have a league best 11-4 July record. At 49-45 they are now only two games behind the Voodoo for second place and have upped their playoff odds to almost 30%. In July they have put up a team ERA of 4.07 but have led the league with 31 home runs and are tied for 5th with 83 total runs. Considering they have three pitching prospects in the Top 75 and eight hitting prospects in the Top 100 it's been quite a rebound from winning 54 games in 2040.

    4. Some of the match-ups we're looking forward to this week: New Orleans at Montreal and Washington at Philly. Both series feature the #1 vs #2 team in the division as New Orleans trails Montreal by five games while Philly trails Washington by just a single game. So far to date Montreal and Washington are both up in the season series with their divisional foes by a count of 6-3.

    5. Congrats to the 2042 BLB All-Stars. On July 18th the Import League took down the Domestic 6-3 behind Dinos catcher Julius Castanos. He hit a 6th inning two-run home run to break the game open and give the IL a 4-1 lead. The DL scored on a Jaxson Neal solo shot in the 7th but the Import added two more runs in the 9th to seal the deal.
