  • The 2042 Daily Keg - Week 6

    05/19/2042

The Domestic and Import squared off this past week as the Bats went 4-2 and took over the top spot in the Power Rankings. The best record belonged to those lovable Millers from Pittsburgh though who swept both Carolina and Denver to move to 24-16 and top spot in the Ale. Division friend Hartford also showed strong success over in the Import as they went 5-1 with a sweep of Batavia and taking two of three against Philly. With everyone playing six here were some team leaders: Syracuse scored 46 runs and swiped 10 bases, Pittsburgh hit 15 home runs, Hartford only allowed 12 runs, the Rum Runners only gave up one home run, and Windy City struck out 65 batters.

    Performance of the Week

1B Dominique Graham - The 25 year old turned in the #1 hitting performance of the season on May 13th...against Baltimore no less. In five at bats he tallied four hits, two home runs, drove in four, and scored four times in an 18-5 Snappers victory. The former 21st overall pick of the 2037 draft was traded from Baltimore to Syracuse back in 2040 and since has been an absolute terror to opposing pitchers. Last season in the playoffs he was named the MVP of the Wildcard, Divisional, and LCS round and in the 25 postseason games he hit .393/.425/.729 with 8 HR's and 17 RBI's and achieved hero status in Syracuse.

    Injury of the Week

P Tom Smith - On May 16 against Philly he got the start but exited after 2.2 innings due to elbow pain in his throwing arm. A x-ray and MRI showed bone chips in the elbow which will require surgery and Smith will miss the rest of the season. Sadly the 35 year old was off to one of his best starts ever as well, and was 5-1 with a 3.74 ERA in eight starts.

    Prospect of the Week
    .

P Marc 'Birdbrain' Putzier - We haven't seen a 'Birdbrain' in the BLB since Yoshiharu 'Birdbrain' Nakasone retired in 2015 after playing 11 seasons with Indy and Carolina. This 'Birdbrain' though has caught the eye of the scouts with 95 mph stuff, his ability to strike out anyone, and three potential really good pitches. One report states "his stuff is expected to become elite once he fully matures...Putzier should rank among the best starting pitching prospects in any organization." High praise for a bird brain.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. Ian Johnston has taken over the closer role in Montreal and seems to be loving it. With a 106-85 record as a starter in Pittsburgh and Montreal over his first eight seasons in the league the change in scenery came at the end of the last season and he's run with it. So far this year he's 0-1 with 13 saves, a 1.74 ERA, and 0.68 WHIP in 19 appearances.

    2. Can we start a Colby 'Mirror' Hullinger watch for the 40/40 club when it's only May? With 9 HR's and 15 SB's the 24 year old is on pace for a 38/64 season. Already considered the second best shortstop in the game behind Preston Capps whats even scarier is that scouts believe he's a better second basemen. He was the 3rd overall pick of the 2035 draft and has turned into everything the Voodoo hoped he would be. You know who was the second overall pick of that draft was...Preston Capps.

    3. Cotuit used a three run 9th inning to come from behind and defeat the Wareham Gatemen to advance into the Cape Cup. Now they will face the Falmouth Commodores in the three game title series starting tomorrow. Cotuit swept the season series against Falmouth 4-0 and are heavily favored to win their second straight CCBL title.

    4. Syracuse players love to run and it shows. So far this season they have swiped 52 bases in 62 attempts, for an 84% success rate. Erwijn 'Moriarity' de Jong is the main threat and is already 18 of 20 for the year. On the other end is LAD who has 12 stolen bases in 19 attempts. The worst percentage in the league though is Windy City who is 17 for 34. Jimmy Doss last season was 35 for 48, this year he's an abysmal 6 for 14.

    5. The family affair of 22-17 Phoenix and 23-16 Seattle comes into play again this week as the Roadruners travel to the great northwest for a three game series. Last time they met Phoenix took two of three at home that were both 1-run games. It looks like Phoenix will throw Zak Stewart, Gerold Schumacher, and Derek Bell. Stewart and Bell are 9-0 combined. Other good match-ups this week will be Washington at New York and Windy City at California.
