  • The 2042 Daily Keg - Week 5

    05/12/2042

    Just as the Blues appeared to be having a championship hangover after putting along to a 10-15 record they run off seven straight wins to rocket up the Power Rankings and come within 3.5 games of the division lead. Other successful weeks belonged to California, Dallas, Maine, Washington, New Orleans, and New York who all went 5-2. Sadly when those teams have that sort of success that means the opposite side of the bell curve wasn't very kind for Phoenix (1-5), and Seattle, Santo Domingo, Hartford, Philly, Batavia, Syracuse, and Carolina who all went 2-5. A wise man once said though, in a 162 game season don't live and die with each week.

    Power Rankings

    1) Montreal Exports (133.9, o)
    2) New York Knights (126.1, +)
    3) Washington Bats (126.0, o)
    4) California Kodiaks (117.5, ++)
    5) Pawtucket Patriots (116.2, --)
    6) Windy City Blues (106.6, ++)
    7) Pittsburgh Millers (100.3, +)
    8) Seattle Pilots (99.6, --)
    9) New Orleans Voodoo (96.6, ++)
    10) Phoenix Roadrunners (93.2, --)
    11) Philadelphia Freedom (89.3, --)
    12) Wilmington Clowns (86.3, -)
    13) Baltimore Bulldogs (85.4, ++)
    14) Dallas Drillers (84.8, ++)
    15) Los Angeles Dinos (83.7, -)
    16) Hartford Whalers (81.4, --)
    17) Santo Domingo Rum Runners (80.8, -)
    18) Toronto Canadians (76.1, +)
    19) Syracuse Snappers (74.4, --)
    20) Denver Bulls (71.1, +)
    21) Carolina Tobs (65.8, --)
    22) Batavia Red Jackets (62.5, --)
    23) Maine Guides (52.6, +)
    24) Indianapolis Racers (52.2, -)

    Performance of the Week

    SS Albert Mether - The 25 year old is more known for his speed and glove at short stop but on May 5th he turned in the #2 hitting performance of the season against Batavia. In three at bats he tallied three hits, one home run, drove in six, and walked two times in a 14-2 whooping of the Red Jackets. Hopefully that makes up for what scouts says about him..."he won't form a long term attachment to a team, has a questionable work ethic, and is thick-headed. Mether is not well-liked by his teammates." Yikes.

    Prospect of the Week

    RF Robin Chamorro - The 17 year old came to the US from the Dominican and is one of the high school darlings of the draft. Scouts think his potential is off the charts but playing behind two other very good players he didn't get a ton of bats this season. His latest report says "he has the highest ceiling imaginable as an elite right fielder." Could he be a top three pick just based on potential alone...time will tell.

    Injury of the Week

    P Trevor Kempka - The 24 year old former third round pick lasted all of six games in his inaugural season for the Drillers before having to leave the May 6th game against Montreal with shoulder pain. The organizations worst fear came true when he was diagnosed with a torn labrum and will miss the rest of the year. On the season he was 2-3 with a 7.23 ERA in 23.2 innings, but anytime you lose the #18 prospect in the league it is crushing to say the least.

    Five Things We Think We Think

    1. With Windy City having their perfect week the 'Brutal Bock' is back. California is 21-12, Seattle is 19-14, Phoenix is 18-15, and Windy City is 17-15. Also lets not forget about LAD who is 16-18. Combined with the success of Washington, New York, Philly and Baltimore in the Stout and we might have nine teams fighting for six playoff spots in a few months.

    2. Another fight marred the BLB this week, the third this season, as the office of the commish has now promised to crack down even harder on the fisticuffs. This time it was Ian Hopman of the Dinos who squared off with Ron 'Vampire' Hutchison of the Red Jackets (that sounds strange to say). Both players were ejected after Hopman beaned 'Vampire' in the 7th inning after giving up a home run to Jimmy Jeffs. Hopman ended up getting the win and a six game suspension while Hutchison got five games off.

    3. The Sweet 16 kicked off this week in the NCAA, while eight teams are battling it out in the CCBL for the Cape Cup. Meanwhile in High School we are down to the final four as the Seton Hall Prep Pirates have a 1-0 lead over the Sulpher High Golden Tornadoes, and the Huntington Beach Oilers have a 1-0 lead over the Carroll High Dragons.

    4. As we peruse the CCBL how about Cotuit two-way starter Todd 'Hook' Gauthier. In 10 starts this year he was 6-1 with a 2.91 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. In 33 starts at 3B he hit .352/.457/.760 with 15 HR's and 45 RBI's. Last season he helped lead Cotuit to the Cap Cup title and this year the Kettlers went an amazing 39-10 and already swept Yarmouth in the first round of the playoffs.

    5. Jinx bot...New Orleans closer Rhett Pruitt hasn't blown a save in 50 chances and short stop Colby Hullinger has scored a run in each of his last 12 games.
