Performance of the Week
P Barton Mejia - The #1 pitcher in the league turned in the #1 performance of the season on July 15th against Indy. In 8 innings he allowed one hit, no runs, struck out 13, and walked 3. The Blues won 12-0 and Mejia is now 8-2 with 1.96 ERA and 0.92 WHIP and is cruising towards his 3rd straight IL Pale Ale. In his last three starts he hasn't allowed a single run while striking out 31 and only walking 6.
Injury of the Week
C T.J. Ellison - The 28 year old is on pace for his best season in the BLB and avoided serious injury after getting beaned by Batavia's Porter Snyder in the 6th inning of their July 11th match-up. Initially even Ellison thought his wrist was broke but x-rays showed it was just a bad bruise and he'll only miss two weeks. New Orleans is fighting for a playoff spot and Ellison on the year has started 59 games at catcher while hitting .271 with 7 HR's and 32 RBI's.
Prospect of the Week
P Joseph Tinsley - The 21 year old was a 2nd round pick in 2039 and is playing for Cali's A ball team. On the year he's started 12 games, and is 6-0 with a 1.27 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. He was selected to the Bush All-Star game last month and scouts say he has three pitches, good stamina but is a "Negative Nancy" in the locker room.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Toronto shortstop Dusty Schmidl had a nice week. On July 11th he went 5 for 5 against Philly in a 9-1 win, then on July 12th he hit his 300th career home run in the bottom of the 8th which was the difference in a 2-1 victory over New York. Schmidl was originally the 2nd overall pick of the 2027 draft by Phoenix. He was traded to SDR in 2034, signed a $120m contract with California in 2035, opted out and signed an $83m contract with Miami in 2038, and finally was traded to Toronto in 2039. He is a 3x All-Star, 4x Designated Driver, and won the 2036 Brewmasters Cup with the Kodiaks.
2. Rory Elia has moved into the top spot of the Top Players list once again. The 26 year old Bulls center fielder is hitting .306/.383/.594 with 20 HR's and 61 RBI's in 79 games. This last week he hit .292 with 3 HR's and 13 RBI's and he's projected to have a 7.2 WAR, his highest since his 2037 Stout Slugger winning year.
3. Speaking of Denver the Bulls/Guides game on July 13th was something else as the teams combined for 27 runs and 40 hits during the 12 inning affair. Denver led 11-7 going into the 7th before Maine scored two in the 7th, one in the 8th, and one in the 9th off a Harrison Gluck solo shot to tie it up. In the 12th Angelo Bonaddio hit a two run single and gave Denver the 13-11 lead. Unfortunately Tom 'Tarantula' Kastner gave up a two run home run to Trey Eubanks and then Tom Benjamin took the loss on a Leon Nash single which allowed Javy Gudino to walk home.
4. Washington and Seattle continue to put fans in the seats as they have made close to $40m this year on ticket sales. Coming in 3rd is SDR who is almost $10m behind. The Rum Runners do lead though in merchandise sales as their $14.7m is tops in the league.
5. The All-Star game is July 20th as the best of the Import and Domestic square off. JD Rice is still #1 in both leagues as he currently sits at 5.4 million votes and will be playing in his 6th straight All-Star game. The BLB will take a break on July 19th before games resume on July 23rd for the second half of the season.
