  • The 2040 Daily Keg - Week 11

    06/25/2040

With most teams playing seven games last week the Seattle Pilots hold onto the top spot in the PR with a 5-2 week and a three game sweep of Windy City. The big winners though were Maine, Washington, and Hartford who all went 6-1. The Guides have been the surprise of the DL as they are now 40-33 and only 4.5 games back from Pittsburgh for the Ale lead. Washington meanwhile has built a three game lead on Batavia in the Stout while Hartford is now 34-38 and has moved into 4th in the Ale. On the flip side Indy, Syracuse, and LAD all went 1-6. Some team leaders for the week: Phoenix cracked 17 HR's, Toronto scored 57 runs, Denver only allowed 18 runs, and Seattle swiped 9 bases.

    Performance of the Week

DH Ron 'Vampire' Hutchison - The 32 year old is closing in on 500 career home runs and still has a sweet bat, which he put on display against Indy on June 21st. With the 3rd best hitting performance of the season he tallied up five hits, two home runs, drove in six, and scored three times in a 14-5 victory. On the season he's hitting .288/.333/.545 with 12 HR's and 40 RBI's.

    Injury of the Week

P Tom Amesbury - For the first time in his career he was put into the starting rotation, and he made it 15 games before a torn elbow ligament on June 23rd will sideline him at least 10 months. In the top of the 4th against LAD he struck out Amari Gibbs for the first out but immediately signaled for manager Tom Vreeland. He was replaced by Cavin Sourabh and Amesbury was taken to a medical facility where the injury was diagnosed. On the season he was 3-7 with a 3.00 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.

    Prospect of the Week

P Devin Trimble - A 6th round pick in the 2034 draft by Washington is now the 83rd overall prospect in the league and putting on a show in AAA. So far in 12 starts he's 7-1 with a 2.31 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 103 K's to 44 walks. Last season he was the AA Pitcher of the Year and he looks on track to win the AAA award this season.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. We had two 3-HR games this week as both JD Rice and Derek Bailey each put on a show in back to back days. Bailey was a 3rd round pick back in 2035, is in his second season for the Roadrunners, and is hitting .282 with 6 HR's. He tore his hamstring early in the season and is just now getting back into form. We all know Rice meanwhile who has hit over 50 HR's each of the last three seasons and is on pace to hit 52 against this year. 'Hurricane' has 254 career HR's but this is the first time he's ever had three in a single game. He also currently leads all IL players in All-Star votes.

    2. Speaking of home runs how about the Phoenix/LAD game on June 19th where Bailey had his trifecta. The Dinos were able to hit two out of the park, while Phoenix hit seven bombs and won the game 16-8. Roadrunners manager Erik Parham was happy with the victory but we think somewhere deep inside it had to hurt. As you recall Parham was a 2x All-Star who played for a multitude of teams from 2017 to 2031 and won 135 games over his career.

    3. The hit streak of 21 games by Richie 'Powder' van Luik is over after he was shut down by Windy City on June 19th. He's now hitting 'only' .398 for the season and has to hit .401 the rest of the year to reach .400 again. Meanwhile in the Triple Crown watch Sheng 'Admiral' Jong is now 1st in the IL in wins (10), ERA (2.31) and K's (124). Checking in on Johnny Thompson, last seasons miracle story, he's almost back up to .300 after hitting .348 last week. Currently hitting .297 we're gonna go ahead and call it and say he's not reaching .400 again.

    4. Montreal is up now 8.5 games in the Lager over New Orleans and near the tops of the league in both hitting and pitching. With what many consider the youngest and most talented infield in the BLB, the biggest surprise has to be 1B Reed Murray. Last season he hit .242 with 25 HR's but this year he's hitting .292 and on pace to hit 32 out of the park. Another big improvement has been from CF Logan Wilcher who hit .240 in 2038, .284 last season, and is now hitting .349 with 13 HR's. He's also driven in at least one run in the last nine games and Montreal is 7-3 over their last 10.

    5. Looking at the playoff odds it appears that in the Domestic only Toronto, Indy, and Dallas appear to be out of it. In the Import we have New York, Carolina, and LAD on the outs. So as of now we have 16 teams with a viable shot at the 12 spots. With over 90 games to go though there is a lot of baseball left.
