Performance of the Week
P Max Connolly - The 10th pick in the 2nd round of the 2035 draft is only 22 years old, developed a change-up, and has started five games for the Knights this year in his first BLB action. On May 25th against Windy City he turned in the #2 performance of the season when he went 8.1 innings, allowed only one hit, struck out seven, and walked one in a 2-0 New York victory. He throws into the 100's and management loves his work ethic.
Injury of the Week
2B Joseph 'Bane' Garneau - The former 1.7 pick in 2033 by Carolina went down hard running the bases on May 27th against California and was thankfully diagnosed with only a knee sprain. He'll miss around two months and will be manning second base for the Tobs again before you know it. In his rookie season he hit .348, last year he hit .342, and so far this year he was hitting .295. He is already a fan favorite around town and at 24 years old is one of the bright spots in Carolina's future.
Prospect of the Week
P Shawn Allison - Picked 1.5 in 2038 he spent 2039 in the Rookie League before getting called up to A ball halfway through. This season he started back in A ball for the Orlando Blackbirds and so far is 7-0 with a 1.63 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 48 K's in eight starts. He is ranked as the #21 overall prospect and originally hails from Egypt Lake-Let, Florida.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Congrats to New Orleans outfielder Dusty Janson for getting his 2000th career hit yesterday in a 10-3 victory over Hartford. Drafted with the 1.8 pick of the 2023 draft by the Denver BC he played eight seasons in Denver before being traded to Baltimore in 2032. He then played four seasons with Baltimore before opting out and signing a $38m contract with the Rum Runners. Since then he's played for New York, SDR again, Baltimore again, and now the Voodoo. He's a 2x All-Star who is a lifetime .284/.336/.504 hitter with 398 HR's and 1106 RBI's.
2. The Rum Runners signed closer Adric Daw to a 5 year/$40.75m extension this past week, signifying that they want him to be their closer for the next half decade or so. Originally drafted by Pawtucket back in 2030 out of HS he was traded to SDR this past season for the rights to New Orleans 1st round pick. With the draft going on behind the scenes this week we were told Pawtucket has used that pick to draft closer Charlie Guevin out of Pacific. The 6'0 righty was 1-1 with 14 saves, a 0.98 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 19 games this season and is a favorite to win the NCAA reliever of the year award.
3. We jinxed 'Powder' this past week as he got gunned down twice on the basepaths, once against Phoenix and once against Baltimore. He's now hitting .407 with 32 SB's but has those two CS's on his record. The other .400 hitter from last season for the Pilots, Johnny Thompson, meanwhile is hitting .288 in 30 games for Seattle. Sometimes you just catch lightning in a bottle. His poor attitude around the clubhouse though and lazy work ethic has upset more than a few in the organization, so he better find his lightning again if he expects to stay with the team.
4. Barton Mejia has really turned it up lately as over his last four starts he's pitched 29 innings, allowed only four runs, struck out 34, and walked four. Over that time he is 0-1. In his latest masterpiece he threw a complete game against New York and allowed two runs but lost 2-0 to Connoly and his Performance of the Week from above. On the season Mejia is 3-2 with a 1.87 ERA in 8 starts. If he wants to win an amazing 3rd straight Pale Ale and Triple Crown he better get on his horse as both Sheng Jong of Batavia and Kaleb Kay in Philly already have seven wins each.
5. Congrats to the Gulfport High School Admirals for winning their 3rd ever championship, and first since 1998. Also congrats are in order for the Chatham Anglers who defeated their rival the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and won their 8th overall title and 3rd in six seasons. Meanwhile in the NCAA it all comes down to game three between Texas A&M and the Golden Bears from California. The Aggies won game one 5-3, Cal took game two 4-2, and now the NCAA title will be decided tomorrow. The Aggies won it all in 2037 behind Saul Wang's dominant season while California has not won a title since 1988, the inaugural season of the NCAA when there were only 16 teams. Their leader was Pancho Martínez who is now 72 years old and played seven seasons with the Pittsburgh Millers before retiring in 2003.
