  • The 2039 Daily Keg - Week 19

    08/22/2039

(AP) The only undefeated week belonged to the Indianapolis Racers who went 6-0 with sweeps of Toronto and Syracuse. They are now 68-58 and hold the second wildcard spot in the DL while their playoff odds shot up to around 95%. The other big weeks belonged to Windy City who went 6-1, and Seattle, Wilmington, and New Orleans who all went 5-1. The red hot Blues had a four game sweep of Carolina while taking two of three from LAD. They are now only 4.5 games back from Seattle for the Bock lead and have the second best record in the IL. The not so great week belonged to Carolina who went 0-7 with an 11.40 ERA and were outscored 78-23 during that stretch.

    Performance of the Week

LF Sean Sayers - The 21 year old rookie for the Blues was selected to the 2039 Horizon League All-Star game and now two months later is lighting up the BLB. On August 20th against Carolina he turned in the #8 performance of the season with three hits, two home runs, seven RBI's and three runs scored in a 23-3 Blues beat down. He was the 11th overall pick in the 2035 draft coming out of HS, where he was a three time HS All-Star for Chandler High.

    Injury of the Week

P Kennedy Hashim - Just last week the Millers GM decided to tell the press that he had too many starting pitchers, so this week the baseball gods took one away. On August 15th against Pawtucket things already were not going well for Hashim and they got worse when he left the game in the 7th due to shoulder pain. He was diagnosed with a torn labrum and will be out at least eight months. This season he was 11-4 with a 4.34 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 2.4 WAR. The 25 year old was discovered by scouts out of Iran back in 2030 and threw a no-hitter last season against Carolina as a rookie.

    Prospect of the Week

1B Johnathan Cathcart - Selected in the 2nd round of the 2034 draft by Denver you won't find Cathcart on the top prospects list but he has done nothing but dominate the minor leagues. The now 22 year old hit .390 in high school, .324 in A ball, .329 in AA, and now .375/.436/.662 with 28 HR's and 78 RBI's in 100 AAA games this year. He has absolutely no glove, and Denver already has 24 year Lincoln Miller as their DH, so we're not sure what his future holds. We do know though that he has a shot to be a legitimate BLB hitter.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. The new look Miami Baseball Team had a rough week under their new GM Brad Z. On August 15th they lost to New Orleans 1-0. On August 17th they lost again to New Orleans 6-5 when they gave up a walk off single by Parker Wood in the bottom of the 11th. The next night they lost to Wilmington 12-10 when in the bottom of the 9th they gave up a three run home run to Dave Davis. Finally on August 19th they lost again to Wilmington 7-5, this time in the bottom of the 11th, when Davis Abbott hit a two out, two run home run. They are now 61-65 and 12 games under .500 since June.

    2. The Bock bloodbath is starting to look like a wedding out of some political fiction fantasy book. Seattle is on top at 84-42 and has won four in a row. Windy City follows at 79-46 and has won six in a row. Next comes California who is 77-50 and won two in a row and five of their last six. Finally we have Denver who is 71-55, won two of their last three, and are +12 since July. The Bulls are still 3.5 games back though from LAD for the final wildcard spot in the IL, which is a cruel fate considering they would have the third most wins in the DL.

    3. The BLB is on pace to not have a slugger hit 50 or more home runs for the first time since 2034 when Ron 'Vampire' Hutchison hit 49. Blues rookie Sidney 'Doofus' Ishibashi and Bulldogs slugger J.D. Rice currently lead the league with 38, with 'Doofus' playing two less games. That puts him on pace for 49 and Rice on pace for 48. As far as record watch Richie 'Powder' van Luik is still on pace for 84 steals, putting him behind Sonny Fulton's record of 87 in 1978. It would be the second most all-time though as Jerry Daly and Jaime Rush hold down that spot with 81.

    4. When Ethan Jackson of California set the all-time save streak at 93, 15 more than second place holder Jon Cleary, many wondered who the next young gunslinger would be to challenge it. Well it is none other than....Ethan Jackson. The 36 year old is currently back up to 36 in a row, which is the highest active streak, and is putting together an absolute gem of a season. To date his numbers are 2-1 with 34 saves, a 0.94 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in 48 games.

    5. With the OSA updating the Top Systems page we now have three of the top five with winning records. New Orleans is top of the power rankings, dominating the DL, and has the 2nd best system in the league. Seattle is second in the power rankings, dominating the IL, and has the 3rd best system. Baltimore comes in at number five and is currently 66-61 and third place in the Stout.

Cathcart will be in the BLB next year. That's all I can say about that.
