2039 Mock Draft with Trades
Back by popular demand, the assistant editor of the DK once again sits down with the BLB’s George W. Bush to take a look at this year’s draft. The following picks do not represent the DK, and are the views of Bush, and him alone.
1. Syracuse – RF Brooks Collins
Thanks to another historically bad season, the Snappers again have the #1 pick. With a farm system loaded with high end pitching talent, this year they take the 20-year-old 5 tool superstar from Oklahoma State. With 29 home runs in 2 years and a career 0.450 OBP, he’ll be the lineup force that makes Snapper fans forget about the loss of Seth Blankenship.
2. New York – C Cristopher Starr
Another team with a plethora of top pitching talent in the minor leagues goes with a bat at 1.2. The top catcher on the board is a two threat with plus power and good defence ability. With work ethic that is off the charts, the Knights hope that Starr rises quickly through the ranks.
3. Santo Domingo – SP James McKinney
With the first of their FOUR first round picks, the Runners take the first pitcher off the board with 49ers ace. Boasting an astounding six plus pitches and a 99 mph he could be the staff workhorse the runners need to go with the bevy of young talent they are currently stockpiling.
4. Baltimore – 2B Jayce Weiss
Yet another team with a tonne of high-end pitching talent in their system. With that in mind, they take the slick fielding Firebird. The 20-year-old has the versatility to play all over the field and was a 2038 Platinum Stick winner to prove he is not all glove.
5. Phoenix – SP Lane Moen
With the fifth pick, Phoenix continues their long history of drafting great starting pitching in the first round as they grab Gatemen ace. If his control reaches its potential and a fastball that already clocks in at 100 mph, Moen could prove to be the steal of the draft!
6. Seattle – CF Tavin Kang
Like a broken record for many teams at the top of the draft, Seattle has very little high-end offensive talent in their system. With a solid core, and the ability to wait for production they take the player with the highest superstar/bust potential in the draft with 17-year-old 5 tool wonderkid.
7. Pittsburgh – SP Uriah Brown
The Millers’ system is loaded at the top with offensive talent. To their delight, the top pitcher on their board is still there with the Woodpeckers standout. Only 17, scouts rave about his three plus pitches and the stamina to go deep in games.
8. Santo Domingo – 3B Jaden Feldmann
We have our first trade as the Runners package 1.16 and 1.24 to move up 8 spots in the draft to grab the power hitting Whitecaps third basemen. 34 home runs last year and 20 this year, to go along with plus defense make Feldman a perfect fit to anchor the hot corner and the middle of the lineup for years to come.
9. Pawtucket – SP Kegan Baesler
With a well-stocked farm system that currently ranks 9th in the BLB the Patriots choose to go the high school route. A small question of control, but the stuff and other two pitches are off the charts. With lots of time to develop this could be the future staff front runner Pawtucket has been missing.
10. Wilmington – SP Tyler Matthews
A team that features a long list of high-end offensive talent takes the heir apparent to JJ Plumley with the 10th pick. Oregon State’s pitcher boasts impeccable control and a fastball that already clocks in at 98 mph, and could be in the Wilmington rotation sooner rather than later.
11. Miami – SP Daishawn Aguayo
Long revered for their creation of the pitching and defence craze that how swept the BLB by storm, the Sharks use their first pick on a college arm. With six pitches, plus movement and stuff, Aguayo will hope to continue, in Miami, what has been two superb college seasons!
12. Pittsburgh – 3B Kody Grace
Going pitcher in their first round, the Millers’ brass is excited to find the power hitting Grace still on the board at pick 12. 39 home runs in two college seasons make his bat perfect for the anchoring a Miller lineup still yearning for the days of Jamie O’Hearn.
13. Windy City – CL Johnny Clayton
Completely devoid of pitching talent in their minor league system, Blues go with the top closer on the board, in hopes that he’ll be ready to close out Mejia wins as early as next year. 80 stuff, 80 fastball, 80 changeup…. Enough said!
14. Los Angeles – CL Andrew Britten
Picking totally off of OSA potential the Dinos go with the OSA darling of the draft. The Rice Owls closer is projected to be 80/60/75 with two plus pitches. Los Angeles has high hopes for the second closer to go in as many picks.
15. Batavia – LF/SP Benny Frank
The first true two-way player comes off the board with pick 15. At 17 years old Frank already possesses a 92-mph heater and a high-end offensive potential, with the ability to play a decent corner outfield.
16. Philadelphia – SS Ozzy Davis
With their first of two first round picks, Freedom take the top offensive shortstop on the board. Incredible raw power, and defence likely better suited to 2B, makes Davis another in the long list of high upside offensive potential bats in the Freedom system.
17. Toronto – RF Rolando Pridgen
Toronto can’t believe their luck, as the player that they almost traded up to get is still available at pick 17. Pridgen has off the charts power and questionable defence. This pick almost makes itself.
18. California – LF Samuel Becker
We have our second trade as Carolina trades 1.18 to the Kodiaks for top rated catcher Jimmy Welborn. Realizing the financial crunch is upon them, the Tobs make one last stab at getting a second title in the Rory Elia era. With the pick, California selects one of the top power bats in the draft, as they again reach for the elusive ’40 home run guy’.
19. Indianapolis – SP Ray Perkins
Although they possess quality pitching talent already, the Racers can’t believe their luck at finding Perkins available at the 19th pick. At 17, there is still developing to go, but a 95-mph fastball is a great place to start.
20. California – SP Cade Hogan
As they continue to stay away from 17-year olds the Kodiaks select the Pacific Tigers ace. Outstanding control and four pitches make Hogan a good bet to be another young gun to replace an aging Tony Ramos in 4 or 5 years.
21. New York – 1B/SP Derick Czeck
Our second two-way player comes off the board as the Knights go with Oilers 1B Czech and his potential to affect both sides of the ball. 43 home runs in high school and almost no pitching experience, the New Yorkers are happy to find him hanging around this late.
22. Santo Domingo – SP L.J. Brewer
With their third pick in the first round the Runners take a talented high school arm from Poly Prep. Already possessing a 96-mph fastball and great intangibles, Brewer looks to make a quick impression as he begins his pro career in Death Valley.
23. Hartford – CF Edward Rohner
Although more likely suited to corner outfield spot, Whalers, fresh off their championship, grab the nearly BLB ready outfielder from Louisiana State. His versatility with the bat and glove will be a perfect fit for the Champs!
24. Philadelphia – CL Donovan Thode
With their second pick, and the final pick of the first round, the Freedom go with the Gatemen closer. The power pitching Thode is a complete dick, but it’s har not to argue with a 98-mph fastball to go along with a plus curveball.
