  • The 2039 Daily Keg - Week 1

    04/11/2039

    (AP)

Welcome to 2039 as Brewers League Baseball kicks off their 62nd season in existence. Last season ended with the Hartford Whalers defeating the Batavia Red Jackets in what many consider the greatest Brewmasters Cup of all time. Ron 'Vampire' Hutchison secured his legacy in Whalers history when in the bottom of the 9th of game seven, with two outs, he crushed a walk-off two run home run to give Hartford a 3-2 victory and second championship in franchise history. If this season lives up to anything close to that we are in for another treat. Hail the Whale!

On to 2039 though. After the first week of play the Montreal Exports are 6-1 and atop the power rankings. The Exports currently hold the record for longest playoff drought as they haven't seen the postseason since 2031. They built a strong farm system, acquired Ian Johnston from Pittsburgh, signed Ian James via free agency and have finally turned the ship around. The other winner of the week was the Washington Bats who also went 6-1. Their ERA of 4.21 for the week wasn't great but they led the league in runs scored with 48. On the other side of life Pawtucket started out the season 0-6, the only BLB team to not register a win. It's never fun to start out in the basement but at least they have 156 games left to play.

    Performance of the Week

P Barton Mejia - Well last years Pale Ale and Triple Crown winner picked right back up where he left off. On April 9th against New York he threw a nine inning gem where he only allowed three hits, one run, walked none, and struck out 14. The game was tied 1-1 though after nine so reliever Tom Jensen came in during the 10th, promptly gave up a solo home run to Jimmy 'Razor' Downey and Windy City took the loss.

    Injury of the Week

P Micah Scott - Denver was picked by many to reach the playoffs but on April 5th their championship dreams took a hit when they lost Scott for four months due to a torn labrum. The 34 year old went 16-5 with a 2.72 ERA last season and was one of the leaders in the locker room. Scott was originally the 10th overall pick in the 2025 draft by Montreal out of Pacific, has been to five All-Star games, and won a Brewmasters in '27 with Montreal and '35 with Wilmington.

    Prospect of the Week

RF Rolando Pridgen - The sophomore for Baylor is currently 20 years old and one of the top prospects for the 2039 BLB draft. Originally hailing from Pembroke Pines, FL he is a leader for the Bears and is currently hitting .298/.404/.684 with 12 HR's and 31 RBI's in 29 games. On April 8th against LSU he hit three home runs and drove in seven and was named the NCAA Player of the Week.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. Baltimore added 6x All-Star starting pitcher Pat Schick this off-season and it paid off already as he went 2-0 with a 0.57 ERA in his first week with the Bulldogs. At this rate he's projected to go 36-0 and we think he just might make it...okay probably not but the Baltimore front office has to be ecstatic that the 34 year old still has it. Did we also mention that Baltimore added Turell 'Two Ton' Morris, Brendan Matson, Rory Smith, and Josh Allen to the team, the last three all coming this week? Well they did and combined with JD Rice this team might beat the single season home run record held by the 2036 Batavia Red Jackets who hit 316 out of the park.

    2. New Orleans had a great season last year when they went 100-62 and went to the playoffs for the first time since 2031. So what did they do, sit pat and hope for the best? No they went out and added Dusty Dills, Zheng-xin Yang in free agency and traded for Rum Runners 27 year old center fielder Chet Sanchez. Dills went 1-0, Yang hit a home run and drove in four, and Sanchez hit .520 and won DL POTW. He also started all six games in CF and posted a +0.9 ZR.

    3. The so called 'feeder' leagues are in full swing as the NCAA, CCBL, and HS are all around 30 games into the season. With the BLB draft on June 16th many players are playing for their BLB futures and are trying to catch the eye of BLB general managers around the league. All three leagues have played their All-Star games and their regular seasons will end the first week of May, which will gives scouts plenty of time to dissect the talent for the draft.

    4. In other non BLB news the minor leagues all open today as well. Last minute roster cut-downs to the 26 required in AAA, AA, and A and 35 in RL are currently ongoing as many players in the BLB world will see their dreams come to a possible end. If you are one of those players who find a red tag in their locker the only advice the DK can give you is never give up...sometimes one man's trash is another man's treasure. Just ask current Miami Shark's pitching prospect Mickey Decker. He was signed out of Germany by Maine back in 2036 only to be released a month and a half later. Miami scouts saw something they liked and scooped him up shortly after with a $1,500,000 bonus. He's now 19 years old and the #20 overall prospect in the league. Don't feel too bad though Maine, the league is filled with stories like these.

    5. In the milestone/record watch for 2039 Johnny Swope currently has 570 career home runs. He had a rough first week and didn't hit one but at 37 years old he is now only 42 short of Jaime O'Hearn's record. His last three years he hit 48, 33, and 32 and he's definitely on the downhill slope of his career but he has a darn good shot. The 11x All-Star, 5x Stout Slugger, and 8x Designated Driver is one of the greatest players in BLB history and has been a pleasure to watch.

How is it not newsworthy that Syracuse isn't in last place? It will likely be the only time all season that happens!
