  • The 2038 Daily Key - Week 14

    07/12/2038

    (AP)

All it took was a little interleague as the down on their luck Bats rebounded with a 6-0 week. They swept both Indy and New Orleans, are now 62-31 on the season, and reclaim the top spot in the weekly Power Rankings. Washington outscored their opponents 38-12, hit .307 to their opponents .212, and now hold a 10 game lead in the Bock over rival Carolina. Other big weeks were LA, California, and Denver who all reside in the Bock and went 5-1. The Bock now has five teams over .500 with Windy City being the last of the five and still coming in at 49-43. On the other side of life New Orleans, last weeks #1, went 0-6 while Syracuse posted a weekly ERA of 8.29 and went winless at 0-6 as well.

    Performance of the Week

2B Killian Pena - The 37 year old from Venezuela signed with the Dinos back in 2036 after playing for Washington for two seasons and still shows no signs of slowing down. On July 9th against Syracuse he tallied up five hits, one home runs, five RBI's, and scored five times in an 18-3 victory. On the season he is hitting .323/.400/.568 with 20 HR's and 55 RBI's with a +3.6 ZR at second base.

    Injury of the Week

P Ed 'Superman' Tesluk - For a man named 'Superman' he sure has a hard time staying off the IL. After signing with Seattle this last winter so far he's missed six weeks with shoulder tendinitis and now he fractured his shoulder blade and will miss another five weeks. The injury occurred on July 7th after he got Gemeda Azikiwe to ground out in the 7th inning but tripped trying to get out of the way of the line drive. On the season Tesluk is 2-3 with 1 save, a 3.62 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP in 23 games.

    Prospect of the Week

P Regis 'Wild Thing' Kenny - In 2033 he signed a contract with Carolina after coming out of Mosfellsbær, HöF. He played a half season in RL in 2035 being moving up to A ball where he has resided since. So far this year he is 4-4 with a 2.78 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 1.3 WAR in 13 starts. He throws a 101 mph fastball but like his nickname implies he struggles with control. Currently he is the #65 overall prospect in the BLB.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. The 'Midsummer Classic' is this week as the Domestic battles the Import in the 2038 All-Star game. The top two vote getters this season are Seattle's Dave Hoyt and Wilmington's Archie Thorington. As of now it looks like the starting pitchers will be Windy City's Barton Mejia and New Orleans' Erik Foley. Sheng Jong of Santo Domingo was leading the DL in votes but now that he plays for Batavia we don't think he will suit up for the DL. Then again we've seen stranger things in the BLB.

    2. Washington loves IFA's and they love Washington. Earlier we talked about Killian Pena but their new international star is outfielder Reger 'Domino' Zuniga who signed from Venezuela in December of 2036. This past week on July 8th 'Domino' hit a double in the 1st (in his second at bat of the inning), a triple in the 3rd, a home run in the 7th, and finally a single in the 9th to complete the cycle. It is the first cycle of the season and the Bats won the game 14-0. On the season he's hitting .334/.447/.621 with 17 HR's and 57 RBI's.

    3. Congrats to closer Ethan Jackson of the California Kodiaks who broke the all time save streak record on July 9th at New Orleans. When Jon Cleary set the record of 78 back in 1978 no one had any idea it would stand for 60 seasons. Jackson just kept on going on July 10th as he picked up another save against New Orleans and now sits at 80.

    4. Turell 'Two Ton' Morris is no longer a free agent as he inked a one year contract with Seattle at a cool $4,500,000. We aren't sure where he will play as Seattle currently has ex-Millers David Perry and Robby Lee playing the 1B/DH role, but when you can sign one of the most prolific sluggers in the BLB history you do it. Not only will it bring fans to the ballpark but it hurts divisional rival California as their fickle fan-base is still upset about letting 'Two Ton' walk this past off-season.

    5. At the All-Star break it looks like the "locks" for the DL playoffs are Hartford, New Orleans, Toronto, Indianapolis and Miami. The battle for the final spot will come down to Pittsburgh, Montreal, Wilmington and Pawtucket. In the IL it looks like Washington, Seattle, California and Batavia are in while Windy City, Denver, LAD, and Carolina will battle for the final two spots. With almost 70 games to play though don't let the so called 'playoffs odds' determine your fate. With injuries, trades, and players getting hot and cold there is still a lot left to be decided.

It was a good week for the Bats. Zuniga is a star, I'm pretty happy I decided to put in a last minute offer when he was in free agency. A best case scenario from his development.
