  • The 2038 Daily Key - Week 5

    05/10/2038

    (AP)

With most clubs playing seven games this week we had a few "perfect teams" as the Washington Bats and Miami Sharks went 7-0. The Bats swept New York and Phoenix while the Sharks took care of business against Maine and Montreal. Washington now has a four game lead in the Stout while Miami has sneaked within a half game of the Lager lead. Other big weeks were had by LAD who went 6-1 and lead the Bock and Hartford who went 5-1 and now lead the Ale by an amazing nine games. In a tale of two cities though poor Phoenix went 0-7, Montreal went 0-6, and Maine, Pawtucket, New York and Denver all went 1-6.

    Performance of the Week

RF Dave Hoyt - The most productive off-season signing so far belongs to Seattle when they snagged Hoyt from Carolina for a cool $94,000,000 over four years. He continues to be worth every penny as he set the #1 hitting performance of the season on May 7th against Philly. In four at bats he recorded four hits, two home runs, drove in seven, walked twice, and scored three times in a 20-2 victory. On the season he's hitting .412/.513/.784 with 8 HR's and 27 RBI's in only 27 games.

    Injury of the Week

P Mason Auvil - In six starts this season for Batavia he was 5-1 with a 3.55 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 121 ERA+. Unfortunately the final start turned out to be the final start of his season as he left after 5.2 innings due to injury. He was later diagnosed with a torn UCL and will be out almost a year. The 24 year old was a 3rd round pick in 2031 and was the Rookie of the Month for May.

    Prospect of the Week

3B Robert 'Critter' Young - The 20 year old for Cotuit is a two time CCBL All-Star who in 92 career games is hitting .249/.369/.541 with 25 HR's and 82 RBI's. He has the ability to play both the infield and outfield and has decent speed on the base paths. The only knock so far is that his work ethic has been reported as less than stellar but even so he's projected to be a high pick in the upcoming draft.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. Just when we started to get down on Syracuse they went out and totally redeemed themselves! The Snappers went 4-3 this week, which means the four wins this week were double the amount they had in the entire month of May. The main victim was Wilmington who found themselves on the wrong end of a Syracuse sweep. The Clowns home crowd was soundly booing by the end of game three after the Snappers came back to score two in the 6th then one in the 8th to win the game 4-3 and complete the sweep.

    2. A few weeks ago we talked about Hartford's Chang-hyun Kym who at 26 years old looked like another great power hitter for the Whalers. The scouting discovery from North Korea crushed 37 home runs last season and so far this year is hitting .350 with 12 HR's. Well he appears to have found a friend as 26 year old 1B D.J. Osburn now leads the team and BLB with 14 HR's after he smashed 31 last season. The former 2nd round pick in 2029 is hitting .326 and is on pace for the laughable totals of 71 HR's and 208 RBI's.

    3. Phoenix had a rough week to say the least but one player who continues to impress is rookie 1B Bruce Viggiano. Picked in the 2030 draft with the 20th pick of the 5th round by Washington, he was traded to Phoenix in the Pat Nunes trade last season. He played in 33 BLB games last season and started the season in the majors this year. So far in 30 games he's hitting .400/.455/.570 with 11 doubles, 2 HR's and 14 RBI's. He leads all rookies in AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS, WAR, OPS+, WPA and WOBA.

    4. The HS playoffs have begun as eight teams battle for the HS Championship. Meanwhile the Cape Cod league and NCAA both finish up this week and the playoffs start next week. In other 'feeder league' news SS Jaden Feldmann of the Brewster Whitecaps hit six home runs this past week, giving him 32 on the year. That ties the record set by Chris Pineda who hit 32 back in 2026 when he played for Cotuit. The NCAA single season record is also 32 held by Wilmington's Fitzpatrick Fisher who set it in 2030 with the Miami Hurricanes. The HS record that probably will never be broken is held by Seattle's Dave Shetler who hit 41 HR's in 40 games back in 2028.

    5. A lot going on in the BLB as both the 2038 draft and the 2038 Hall of Fame voting are ready to kick off. Who is going to be the #1 pick? Who is going to make it to the BLB HoF? It's the beginning of a players career to get drafted and the ultimate ending to be selected to the Hall.

      Good stuff.

I'm glad to see Viggiano getting a chance in Phoenix and doing so well. I've always thought he could hit, but it's hard to hide him in the field anywhere. He should do just fine as a DH or occasional 1B. I'll be watching to see how all those guys that went to Phoenix do.
