  • The 2037 Daily Keg - Week 23

    09/14/2037

    (AP)

The Rum Runners are back on top with a 6-0 week and sweeps of Maine and Toronto. After they lost six in a row late last month and had critics swarming, they have reeled off 12 straight wins and lead the Lager by 10.5 games. The other big week was California who went 6-1 and are now 11-1 in September. Talk about two top teams playing at the highest level when it counts. Not to be left in the dust Seattle went 5-2 and still trail California by only 3.5 games for the Bock title. Those that struggled this week are Toronto, Philly, Syracuse, Baltimore, Pawtucket, and Batavia. They all went 2-5 with Batavia and Toronto in the midst of a playoff race while Syracuse races against the clock to reach 39 wins and not be the most futile team in BLB history.

    Performance of the Week

P Robby 'Bruiser' McEvoy - On September 9th he turned in the 4th best pitching performance of the year when he tossed a complete game shutout of Phoenix. He allowed only three hits, struck out nine, and walked one during the 4-0 victory. 'Bruiser' on the season was 1-9 with a 5.00 ERA in Baltimore before being traded to California in July. Since then he is 5-2 with a 2.95 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 155 ERA+. #ShopBaltimore

    Injury of the Week

LF Dave 'Sureshot' Schrader - This 3rd round pick back in 2029 has turned into quite the player for the Blues. This season he is hitting .296/.351/.499 with 24 HR's and 73 RBI's in 133 games. Unfortunately on September 8th in the 7th inning against Seattle he was involved in a fielders choice at second and collided hard with Pilots 2B Nehemiah Daniel. 'Sureshot' got up slowly and had to leave the game. He was diagnosed with a torn meniscus and will miss the rest of the season.

    Prospect of the Week

LF Lafayette Collazo - Selected in the 2nd round of the 2036 draft out of Cal State this is Lafayette's first full season in the Rookie League. He's done nothing but impress as he's hitting .346/.411/.583 with 19 HR's and 70 RBI's in 86 games. In the Porter he's 1st in batting average, and 2nd in home runs and RBI's. Sadly though his Bluejackets have lost nine in a row and at 42-44 have been eliminated from the postseason.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. The AAA, AA, and A playoff are a go with AAA starting today and the other two already one game into the best of three first round. The Rookie League also has two games left in the regular season before the playoffs start later this week. Postseason baseball in September for all four minor leagues is a good time for all.

    2. We talked about SDR up top but their September has been something else on the pitching side. In 11 games they have allowed 24 earned runs and only 3 home runs. California is in second with 10 home runs allowed. Jong and Alston are 5-0 in their last seven combined starts while Dave Esterline, who has struggled since coming over from Syracuse, has rebounded and has saves in five games.

    3. Carolina has now lost as many games in September as they did in all of August where they went a leagues best 24-5 and gained seven games on Washington to take over the Stout lead. Can they hold on to take the crown? They meet starting today for a huge three game series in Washington. So far in nine games the Tobs are 7-2 against the Bats but six of those games have been within two runs. One person who is looking to get it going for Carolina is Davy Hoyt. In eight games against Washington this season he is hitting .120/.313/.160 with zero home runs and zero RBI's. Last week alone he hit .571 with 6 HR's and 14 RBI's. In the past 18 games he's hitting .433 with 10 HR's and 23 RBI's. Word from some sources close to him is that he can't wait to kick this series off.

    4. David Perry of Seattle signed a one year extension this past week for $4,000,000. He's only played in 70 games for Seattle this year and is currently in AAA Vancouver after being sent there last week. With Jimmy Edge and Johnny Swope in the lineup as DH poor Perry has gone the way of many in the BLB who have a hard time in the field. It's an interesting time when someone who averaged nearly 40 home runs a season in his first five years is grateful to have a contract for 2038 already in place.

    5. The playoff race in the IL has come down to Batavia, Windy City, and New York. The Red Jackets have over a 90% playoff probability at 83-62, Windy City is at 65% at 81-65 and New York is at 43% with a 81-66 record. Next week Batavia has a huge four game series at Windy City, while New York doesn't play either team down the stretch but has tough match-ups against California and Washington to end the season.
