Performance of the Week
LF Dusty Osteen - On August 17th against Hartford he had five at bats. In those five at bats he had five hits, two home runs, six RBI's and scored three times in a 15-9 victory. The 31 year old is pulling off one of his best seasons ever as he's hitting .327/.363/.457 with 7 HR's and 28 RBI's in 78 games.
Injury of the Week
1B Dylan Owens - Two weeks after hitting his 500th career home run he went down on August 12th running the bases after hitting a run scoring double. He was helped off the field and diagnosed with an oblique strain that will sideline him at least a month. Whispers around the organization state that the soon to be 40 year old might have played his last BLB game. If so it was a great career for the 2014 first overall pick. He went to seven All-Star games, was a six time Designated Driver winner, and helped lead Toronto the 2022 Brewmasters Cup. He is 8th all-time in hits, 6th all-time in home runs, and 11th all-time in RBI's.
Prospect of the Week
CF Riley Middleton - The 21 year old was the 1st pick in the 10th round of the 2033 draft by Toronto and has spent four seasons in the Rookie League. He doesn't show much promise according to scouts but on August 14th he hit a 3-run home run in the 8th inning to give Lakefield the lead in game three of first round of the RL playoffs. The Bluejackets went on to win the game and are now down 1-0 to Rochester in the second round. Time for some 'Middleton Magic'.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. The post All-Star game race has been heated in the Lager. Santo Domingo is 22-7. Indianapolis is 23-5. No one else in the league has over 19 wins. The Rum Runners are holding on to a 2.5 game lead as both teams battle for the division title.
2. The streak is over for Elmer Caceres who was held hit less for the first time in 29 games on August 13th against Denver. He somewhat recovered enough to still hit .400 for the week with 5 home runs and 9 RBI's. Over the past 18 games he's hitting .403 with 12 HR's and 24 RBI's.
3. The fighting continues as this week Indy's Jaydan Villicana squared off with Philly's Gemeda Azikiwe after a second inning beaning then brawl on August 13th. Villicana was given a 9 game suspension, tying the highest received this season, while Azikiwe got four games.
4. Rory Elia has now passed Johnny Swope by one home run and still has an eleven RBI lead in Swope's quest for his second Triple Crown. 'Big Sticks' .350 average is still tops as Elia is hitting .324 so the odds favor Swope much more than Elia. In the history of the BLB there have been only three hitters who accomplished the feat: Swope, CJ Stripling and Ricky Murillo.
5. Montreal is 41-75. Denver is 37-79. California is 77-41. This is also the 1-2-3 for the minor league system rankings.
