Performance of the Week
P Ian Johnston - On April 20th against Miami he pitched a one hit shutout with six strikeouts and one walk in a 6-0 Millers victory. In three starts this season it was the 24 year olds first victory after he tries to rebound from last seasons 4.41 ERA.
Injury of the Week
CF Mat Weir - During the 2nd inning of the April 20th game against Wilmington he tried to throw out Archie Thorington at home and not only didn't get the out but slowly walked to the dugout after. He was removed from the game and diagnosed with an oblique strain that will keep him out at least two months. The two time All-Star was hitting .314/.352/.510 with 2 HR's and 6 RBI's and will be sorely missed in the Dukes lineup.
Prospect of the Week
2B Asa Wyman - After hitting .330/.433/.563 with 11 HR's and 43 RBI's last year he's hitting .397/.489/.642 with 7 HR's and 38 RBI's this season and was selected to his second straight All-Star game. He has the potential to play both the infield or outfield and at 20 years old has a lot of room to grow.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. When the DK picked Marco Taylor to hit .330 with 40 HR's we thought we were being generous. So far in 13 games he's hitting .481/.548/.981 with 7 HR's and 15 RBI's. We were shocked he lasted until the 3rd overall pick in the 2031 draft until we realized Robert Jessee and Seth Blankenship went first and second. Not bad company to say the least.
2. In the 'Time To Say Goodbye' section of the season preview we listed Dave Teel and left off one important guy...Jamie O'Hearn as he retired September 6th last year. The nine time All-Star, eight time Designated Driver, and all time leader in BLB home runs hung it up after 20 seasons in the BLB. The active player with the next most home runs is Dylan Owens with 493...119 less than O'Hearn.
3. The debt in Syracuse keeps piling up but they are built to win. They are currently first in batting average, runs scored, extra base hits, runs allowed, hits allowed, opponent average and opponent home runs. Two weeks in and they have a league leading run differential of +54...one better than Batavia who checks in at +53. They are also 9-1 on the road and their two losses were by one run each.
4. JJ Plumley shows no signs of slowing down after that big contract and amazing last few months of the 2035 season. So far this year he's 2-0 with a 0.44 ERA and 0.73 WHIP in three starts. To recap last season he went All-Star, $216m contract extension, no-hitter in the playoffs, Brewmasters Cup champion, and Pale Ale winner.
5. Look for HoF voting to open up soon as this year the pitchers wing is going to get some additions. Ed 'Dropkick' Carroll, Alex Dominguez, Dave Harmony, Jaime 'Banshee' Stone, and Jerrod Blick will all make their first appearance on a pitching heavy ballot.
