Performance of the Week
P Jamie Pierce - On July 14th against California he went 8 innings, allowed zero runs, and struck out seven in a 4-0 New York victory. On the year the 27 year old is 10-4 with a 2.83 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 2.7 WAR. This is his 6th season in the BLB after being picked by the Knights in the first round of the 2027 draft.
Injury of the Week
P Tom Gowans/P Manny Solis - The double whammy this week by the BLB injury gods as Gowans has to have ebow ligament reconstruction surgery and will be out for 14 months while Solis has a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament and will be out for 10 months. The 26 year old Gowans signed a $73 million extension earlier this year while the 25 year old Solis is only in his second full season with Windy City. Gowans was 6-6 with a 3.66 ERA while Solis was 6-5 with a 3.48 ERA.
Prospect of the Week
CF Hyun-seung Bark - The 23 year old was called up by Batavia over a month ago and has appeared in 31 games hitting .315/.403/.532 with 5 HR's and 16 RBI's while playing 27 games in center field. He is the #41 prospect in the league but his status will expire soon and he appears to have found a place to stay in the big leagues.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. The long journey of 33 year old Manny 'Big Cat' Nieto is winding down after being claimed this week by Maine off of waivers from Philadelphia. He was an IFA from Puerto Rico who was signed by Seattle to an 8 year/$249,000,000 contract back in 2021. He helped lead Seattle to a 2026 Brewmasters victory before being signed to a 7 year/$175,000,000 by Indy in 2027. He was traded to Death Valley later that season and then traded to Denver two years later where he hit his 300th career home run and was a back to back winner of the Designated Driver award in left field. After being released Seattle signed him to a 1 year/$1,500,000 contract in 2032, he signed another one year contract with New York in 2033 and finally his third straight one year contract with Philly this season. After hitting .179/.306/.330 with 4 HR's and 13 RBI's in 112 at bats he was placed on waivers and claimed by the Guides.
2. At the All-Star break we have Pittsburgh, Miami, Washington/Batavia and Seattle as the four division leaders. When we look at ZR across the league Pittsburgh is at +6.9, Miami is at 0.0, Washington is at -0.5, Batavia is at +26.7 and Seattle is at +12.8. Washington has the better pitching, Batavia has the better defense...who wins out?
3. With the IAFA market exploding this week let's look back at two of the big spenders from several years ago. In 2031 Aden 'Liquidator' Grant signed a contract with a $9.1m bonus for Washington while Louie Dano Dasmarinas signed a contract with a $9.25m bonus for Pittsburgh. Grant hails from Jamaica and is the only BLB player in the entire world from there while Dasmarinas is one of 63 players from Brazil. After moving up to AA last season the 19 year old Grant was sent back to A this year where he's hitting .362/.401/.557 with 9 HR's and 57 RBI's in 70 games. Dasmarinas is 20 and also in A ball where he is hitting .310/.359/.515 with 14 HR's and 65 RBI's in 86 games. Grant is currently the #69 prospect in the league and was named to the 2034 All-Star game while Dasmarinas is the #36 prospect and was not named to the All-Star game but has a much better mustache.
4. Triple Crown watch at the break. Jimmy Jeffs of Seattle is hitting .333 with 21 HR's and 58 RBI's which puts him 2nd, 3rd, and 2nd respectively. He's only two points off in average while being five home runs and eleven RBI's down. Pitching wise Miami's Louie Reutter is 1st in ERA with a 1.62, 1st in wins with 13 and 4th in K's with 103. Unfortunately for him the strikeout leader is JJ Plumley with 135 and he might be almost impossible to catch up with.
5. Congrats to the 2034 BLB All-Star selections! Safe travels to the Dominican Republic.
