  • The 2034 Daily Keg - Week 13

    Monday, July 10th, 2034

    (AP)

All hail the Red Jackets who take over the top spot in the Power Rankings by going 6-0 with sweeps of Syracuse and Miami as they have now won eight in a row. Looks like Batavia enjoys interleague as they move to only two games back from Washington for the lead in the Stout. Other big weeks belonged to Pittsburgh, Toronto, and Maine who all went 5-1 while Montreal, Indy, Montreal and Denver all went 1-5. Some stat leaders of the week: Hartford pounded 13 home runs, Wilmington swiped nine bases, Maine posted a 2.09 ERA, and Pawtucket only allowed three home runs.

    Performance of the Week

1B Dave Schaefer - 'Smiling Dave' as his teammates call him had a whopper of a game on July 3rd against Indy. In four at bats he hit two home runs and drove in six in a 9-3 Knights victory. On the year he's hitting .246/.350/.469 with 15 HR's and 41 RBI's.

    Injury of the Week

P Robby Hurd - The 34 year old Hurd was called up by California two weeks ago and in his second start had to leave the game after only three innings with elbow pain. X-rays showed bone chips in his elbow which will require surgery and he will miss the rest of the year. Originally drafted in the 2nd round of the 2017 draft by the KC Comets he started his BLB career in Maine and has played for Denver, Death Valley/Santo Domingo, Montreal, and now California.

    Prospect of the Week

1B Tom Gross - Another Carolina prospect, this time it's the 22 year old Gross who is currently in AAA and the #63 prospect in the league. In 82 games so far this year he's hitting .299/.376/.556 with 19 HR's and 56 RBI's with a 2.1 WAR. He's been POTW twice this season so far and was selected to the Horizon League All-Star game.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. At 7:05 PM EST on July 4th the LAD/Toronto game kicked off. With just a tad over 20,000 paying fans in the seats, who were promised fireworks after the game, there was excitement in the air. When the game finally ended at 2:23 AM EST we heard the number of people left barely numbered in the hundreds. Yes folks the game went over seven hours and went 22 innings before Ron Kissane, in his 10th at bat, hit the first pitch in the bottom of the 22nd over the wall and mercifully ended this one with the Canadians winning 6-5. And after all that Toronto management decided to postpone the fireworks until a later date.

    2. How about the Stout. Washington leads the pack with a 52-30 record, then comes Batavia at 51-33, Philly at 49-34, Baltimore at 47-36, New York at 40-40 and Carolina at 40-41. At this rate the entire IL playoffs could be Seattle against the Stout.

    3. Batavia's win streak is up to eight as mentioned before. Their closer, AJ Ingle, in his last 13 games is 1-0 with 11 saves and a 0.69 ERA. The nine time All-Star and two time BLB champion may be 38 but he shows no signs of slowing down.

    4. Mike 'Yoyo' Morla is now 313 hits away from tying the all-time record of 3,546 held by Steve Suarez. He's projected to finish around 3300 this season and just turned 39 eleven days ago. He's under contact with California the next five seasons but sources say Morla has quietly made it known he plans on retiring short of that. If he stays healthy he could break the record by the end of 2036 at the ripe old age of 41. The 12 time All-Star and 11 time Designated Driver is a shoo-in for the HoF regardless if he breaks it or not.

    5. The All-Star rosters will be announced at the end of this week. Here is the official 2034 All-Star game logo that was just released on the BLB's social media account.

That's ok, he's likely to rebound in his 40s.
