Performance of the Week
CF Mat Weir - At 24 years old Weir is one of the better center fielders in the league that people don't know about. On June 23rd against Indy he had four hits, drove in four, and scored three times in a 10-3 Dukes victory. On the year he's hitting .302/.344/.457 with 10 HR's, 32 RBI's and a +0.4 ZR in CF.
Injury of the Week
P Dave Calvert - Last year the 39 year old was an All-Star for the Millers and even though he was struggling this season he was a big part of the rotation for Pittsburgh since they don't have a lot of starting pitching depth. On June 25th though against Miami he hurt his elbow pitching and x-rays showed he had a hairline fracture which will keep him out the rest of the season.
Prospect of the Week
P Yuri 'Punk' Baldwin - The 20 year old was the 5th overall pick in the 2030 draft by Phoenix and currently plays in AA for Mojave. He's 5-5 with a 4.56 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 15 starts. Currently the #20 overall prospect he throws over 100 mph and has a superb fastball along with a changup and splitter.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Ron Hutchison hit four more home runs this week and now leads the league with 28, four more than second place. He's on pace for 60 and at 25 years old is coming into his prime which is a scary though for the rest of the league. He also leads the league in RBIs with 66 but is second behind Dusty Janson in SLG, and 3rd behind Janson and RJ Kapper in OPS.
2. Speaking of Dusty as of now he is the only hitter in the league with a legit shot at the triple crown. He's 1st in the IL in home runs (24) and RBI's (53) but third in batting average (.326) behind Bert Garza of Washington who is hitting .345.
3. We forgot to mention a few weeks ago congrats to Cal State Fullerton who won the NCAA College World Series. After finishing the regular season with a league best 37-13 record they lost to UNLV in game one before winning 9-8 in game two and crushing the Rebels 16-1 in the deciding game. The MVP was shortstop Martin Dunne who hit .385 with 1 HR and 4 RBI's during the series. Eleven days later he was drafted by the Batavia Red Jackets in the 1st round of the 2033 draft.
4. In the they are better than their 41-34 record category Hartford leads the league with a +80 run differential but is second behind Syracuse with a -6 PYT and are 10-15 in one run games. In the they are worse than their 51-24 record category Pittsburgh is second in the league with a +5 PYT and is an absurd 16-3 in one run games. Just like in Vegas the odds eventually catch up with you and these two could be neck and neck down the stretch.
5. A few seasons ago Scooter Nackers was 15-6 with a 3.32 ERA for the New York Knights. Last season he was 4-0 with a 1.75 ERA before needing season ending surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow. This off-season he signed with the Bats but sadly was 4-7 with a 6.35 ERA for Washington before finally being demoted to AAA this last week. In his first start there he gave up 8 earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched.
