Performance of the Week
SS Nehemiah Daniel - The Pilot shortstop ravaged Carolina on May 25th with four hits, four RBI's, four runs scored, and two home runs. It was all for naught though as Carolina won 10-9 in the 11th inning. On the year Daniel is hitting .311 with 8 HR's, 25 RBI's, and a 2.4 WAR and 154 wRC+.
Injury of the Week
P Tom Lambert - On May 28th against Santo Domingo he made it to the top of the 6th, but after getting Bing-zhang Lopan to fly out he had to leave the game with elbow pain. An MRI showed he had torn his flexor tendon and will be out for almost a year. At 35 years old this might be it for Lambert who was picked 17th overall in 2017 by Los Angeles and made his BLB debut in 2019. Since then he has amassed 129 career victories while posting a 3.97 ERA and won a title last year with the Guides. On the year he was 6-3 with a 3.23 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.
Prospect of the Week
3B Archie Thorington - The international amateur free agent from the US Virgin Islands was signed by Wilmington in 2027 and is currently in the Wildcats AA club hitting .353 with 1 HR and 16 RBI's in 24 games. After starting the year in A ball he moved up only after 20 games and looks to be thriving. He can run, he can play third, and his contact and power potential have the organization excited to say the least.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Word came out of Maine this week that their GM will be leaving the organization at the end of this season. Reports surfaced that there has been a lot of tension between him and owner Emilio Escobedo Jr, and it's finally starting to boil over. Winning fixes a lot of issues but apparently even four Brewmaster Cups has not been enough to put off the split any longer. League sources say there is a non-compete agreement between the GM and owner and he won't be able to get hired by any other team for several seasons. Once that has expired though I guarantee several organizations will be knocking on the door of a guy with 3820 wins and 20 trips to the postseason.
2. Congrats to Jamie O'Hearn who belted his 600th home run on May 29th against Baltimore. His 1st home run came in 2015 and since then he's hit 599 more, drove in 1689 runs, scored 1618 times, walked 888 times and stole 200 bases. The nine time All-star and eight time Silver Slugger will retire one day and just might get into the Hall of Fame the next.
3. Speaking of Hall of Fame congrats to the new class: Willie Fajardo, David Rodriguez, Johnny McDade, Jared Kirby, Jimmy Kidwell, Geoff Yonke, Dave Piekarski, Hector Gonzalez, Fred Frederick, and Jimmy Douglas. To see their introductions and memorabilia click here.
4. New Orleans can't wait for this month to be over. Their GM suddenly quit, their star IFA pitcher Frederick Wilson went down with an injury, and they went 5-23. They had the worst ERA in the league (4.75) and the lowest batting average (.201). It can only get better right?
5. All-Star voting has begun. Currently Johnny Swope leads the IL in votes while Run Hutchison leads the DL. The game will be played Tuesday, July 20th.
